Nell Goddin is a Wall Street Journal and a USA Today bestselling American writer of cozy mysteries, suspense, and thriller novels. She is best known for writing the Molly Sutton Mystery series featuring the chief protagonist in the form of a 38-year old woman named Molly Sutton. Goddin’s books are generally set in France, where she has lived for several years. In addition to her bestselling mystery series, she has written a nonfiction book as well as a novella. The former was written in collaboration with authors like Colleen Helme, Cindy Bell, Kim Hint Harris, Abby Vandiver, Colleen Mooney, Amy Reade, Judith Lucci, Summer Prescott, and a few others as well. Author Goddin was brought up in Richmond, Virginia. She has resided in places such as New York City, New England, and France.
Prior to stepping into the world of novel writing, Goddin was employed as a radio reporter. She has also worked as a short-order omelet chef, baker, and SAT tutor. Goddin even tried her hand at waitressing, but was fired from her job twice. As of today, she resides in Virginia with her teenage children and a large number of pets. Author Goddin earned her bachelor’s degree from Dartmouth College followed by an MFA from Columbia University. As evident in her Molly Sutton novels, Goddin is too wild about traveling, croissants, exploring France, and looking for familiar relationships in small-town lives. She always daydreams about going to live in France again.
Goddin feels that she is deep into mysteries at the moment and really enjoys figuring out different ways of covering the criminals’ tracks, wondering about sociopaths, and researching poison. One can say about her that she spends most of her time thinking about degenerate behavior. During her spare time, she likes to be in the company of her kids, pets, and flowering plants in her garden. Author Goddin claims that she started writing at the age of eight. Since then, she has never thought of doing anything else. She considers the first book of the Molly Sutton series as her favorite one as it helped her to establish herself as a noteworthy author of mystery stories. Goddin began writing the book during her trip to France. At that time, she was staying in a small village near the Mediterranean coast, as an artist’s neighbor.
Everything was so blissful and happy there that Goddin felt the novel just fell into her lap, and she only had to write it down from her imagination. The authors who have influenced the most include Patricia Highsmith and F. Scott Fitzgerald. Whenever Goddin starts writing a new book, she finds it very challenging to remember the details of the events in the particular scene that she works on at that moment. The most rewarding part about writing for her is losing herself in her stories and seeing the characters coming alive and bossing her around. After she is finished with the writing part of her current novel, Goddin intends to start working on a new standalone book. And it is going to be a more literary suspense/crime story instead of a straight-up mystery.
In addition to that, Goddin also intends to continue writing cozy mysteries and entertain her fans with the kind of stories that she is more comfortable with. Goddin looks forward to relocating to France someday and open her gite business. She is grateful for the immense support she has received from the readers for all her books. Author Goddin is also thankful for all the rave reviews and comments given to her novels by various critics. Her style of writing, storytelling abilities, character development, and overall plot settings are highly appreciated by critics, reviewers, and readers. She hopes that they will also like her future work and review them as genuinely as they have reviewed her previous books. Goddin likes to give the credit of her success to her family and friends for being by her side all along her journey and believing in her ability to write intriguing mysteries.
The Molly Sutton Mystery series written by author Nell Goddin began in 2015 and comprised of 9 books up to 2019. Each book of this consisted of the main protagonist in the role of an amateur detective named Molly Sutton. Other essential characters mentioned by Goddin in this series include Nancy Drews, Chief Dufort, Valerie Boutillier, Ben, and a few others. Every book of the series is set in a small village called Castillac in France. The debut book of this mystery series is entitled ‘The Third Girl’. It was released by the Beignet publication in 2015. The book opens by introducing Molly Sutton as an out of work lady in her late thirties. She arrives in Castillacl to get over the painful memories of her recently broken marriage. Molly looks for peace, pastry, and beautiful gardens in the quiet town. But, she gets involved in so much chaos and panic that she had never imagined. Only a few days after her arrival in Castillac Molly learns about the mysterious disappearance of a local student. She does not realize when she got embroiled in the investigation and found herself chasing the culprit. Working with the support of the local authorities, Molly appears to be enjoying the cat and mouse chase and makes up her mind to not rest until she has provided justice to the victim.
The second volume of the series is called ‘The Luckiest Woman Ever’. It was also published in 2015 by the Beignet publication. This novel begins by mentioning that Molly Sutton stumbles upon the body of a dead victim. Without wasting any time, she begins the investigation. Molly finds herself elbowing and eavesdropping her way into people’s conversations all over the village of Castillac. When she comes to known Chief Dufort has caught the wrong man as the culprit, Molly strives even harder to make him understand the actual murderer is still roaming freely. She vows to not let the killer take the life of another innocent victim and put him behind bars as soon as possible. Along with describing an intriguing murder mystery, this novel tells more about Molly Sutton and her friends. It is expertly woven with excellent characters, in-depth plots, and a taste of French cuisine. Readers were easily drawn to this novel due to all these factors and helped to make it a worldwide success.
