Nell Harte’s novel “The Slum Widow” is a work set in the Victorian era on several ships coming back from the Baltics. In the bowels of the ships, there is a deadly disease that could infect the British if these ships were to dock.
The lead in the novel is Nellie Martin, whose life is about to be upended forever. In Newcastels’ poverty-ridden slums, Nellie is waiting for the return of her beloved husband who is out at sea.

As residents begin dying, Nelliw works hard alongside Dr. Henry Wright at the hospital to find information about eh mysterious illness.

Together, they unearth clues to the disease and as they slow down infection and prevent the spread of the illness, love begins to develop between them.
But then the disease comes back with a vengeance and takes Nellie in its fearsome grip. Confused and heartbroken Henry scrambles to find answers.
