About Neon Yang

Neon Yang is a Singaporean science-fiction author whose work has been published in a number of different outlet, including Uncanny, Lightspeed, Strange Horizons, and Tor.com. At the forefront of their field, they have an MA in creative writing from the University of East Anglia. Additionally, they were previously a journalist, as well as a practicing scientist. Neon Yang is an intersectional feminist, focused on analyzing issues of gender, race, and class in their work.

Writing Career

The Descent of Monsters

Neon Yang’s ‘The Descent of Monsters’ was published on July 31, 2018 by Tor.com. The third book in the ‘Tensorate’ silkpunk fantasy series, it was well-received, nominated for both Locus and Lambda awards in 2019. Readers are advised to read the books in the series in order for the best experience.

The Rewar Teng Institute of Experimental Methods met a grisly end when a rogue experiment escaped. Investigators Chuwan and Tensorate arrived to find a sea of bones and blood, with no survivors. They brought back Sanao Akeha, the terrorist leader, and her mysterious companion Rider, who could offer few clues. The Genesis of Misery

On September 27, 2022, the stand-alone science-fiction fantasy novel ‘The Genesis of Misery’ was published by Tor Books. It was soon recognized as a Goodreads Choice Award nominee in the same year, thus propelling it to the heights of literary acclaim. The novel was widely acclaimed for its complex and intelligent storytelling, and remains a popular choice among readers today.

Misery Nomaki is a nobody from a mining planet with rare stone-working powers similar to a saint. Misery keeps their power a secret to avoid being labelled as voidmad, like what happened to their mother. Misery is then led to the center of the Empire by a mysterious voice. They are trapped between two factions hoping to use Misery’s power to win a war.

Misery starts training with a group of outlaws and outcasts and grows close to a rebellious royal known as Lady Alodia Lightning. The voice that guides Misery grows bolder, and it looks like Misery is succumbing to the same voidmadness as their mother.
