In The Beginning
Nevada Barr was born in a small western town in Nevada, called Yerington. She was born to two pilots and mechanics, and also has a sister named Molly. Contrary to popular belief, Nevada was not named after her state, but rather after a favorite character in a book that her father read. Her sister followed in her parents footsteps and became a pilot, leaving Nevada to be the black sheep of the family. Nevada was raised in the area of Johnstonville, California, where she would find a growing interest in the subjects writing and theatre.
Nevada’s School Life
Nevada did pretty well in school. She graduated high school in 1970, and went on to the University of California, going to the Irvine branch. She graduated from UC in the mid-seventies and acquired a BA degree in speech and drama, and also received an MFA for acting.
Her work in Theatre And Film
Nevada had a career that expanded over two decades in film, voice over work, and the theatre. She did a number of plays, commercials, and also did voice overs for radio. While working as an actress, she lived in New York City, and then moves to Minneapolis. In the summer time, she worked as a park ranger. She worked in many different states as a park ranger, including the Isle Royale in Michigan and the Guadalupe Mountains in Texas. When she wasn’t working as a park ranger or actress, she had jobs that involved writing. These included being a restaurant critic, and a travel writer. She moved frequently while working different jobs, and the last place she ended up moving to was Mississippi. It wasn’t until she made it to Mississippi that she decided to write novels, and her first ever published book came out in 1983.
Nevada’s Writing Career
Nevada had always been interested in writing. While she worked as a park ranger, she wrote several campfire stories that she had published, and she even taught people how to do storytelling. She had her first novel, titled Bittersweet, published in 1983. Although she had been working for a while as a writer, she did not become well known until her Anna Pigeon series came to light. The first in her Anna Pigeon series was titled Track of the Cat, and was published in 1993, ten years after her first novel had been published. From 1993 and on, she has mainly written mystery novels that include her world famous main character.
Anna Pigeon
Anna Pigeon is the main character in Nevada’s mystery books. The character is a female park ranger who loves both nature and animals, and ends up solving a bunch of mysteries. Her first book in the Anna Pigeon series was published in 1993, and it ended up winning two awards; the Agatha award and the Anthony award for best mystery. Her second book in the Pigeon series was loosely based on her adventures when she worked as a park ranger in Texas, and it was titled A Superior Death. Like Track of the Cat, it was well received and skyrocketed her to fame as a budding mystery writer. Thanks to these two novels, Nevada is now one of the most well-known and well-liked mystery authors around in a writing career that has expanded for thirty years.

Nevada leads a fairly private life. She was married to a man she met when she worked as an actress, his name was Donald Paxton. He also switched careers and got involved in the environmental movement, which persuaded Nevada to work as a park ranger during the summers. Nevada was born on March 1st, 1952. I’ve read them all; given the controversy politically about protecting our parks, I’d say there’s still fodder for her/Anna Pigeon for more mystery!!
Nevada Barr is phenomenal!!! One of the very best writers of our generation. I wish she would hook up with CJ Box. And her character Anna Piegon, and Joe Pickett have to figure out the mystery together.
I have been a huge fan of Nevada Barr. I have purchssed all of her books in the Anna Pigeon series. I can see them up in my book nest above the rear window in my RV that I have lived in since retiring from the National Park Service in 2011. Yes, I was a real ranger and loved my NPS career.
I love the characters and the provenience. I have talked about these books for years and one of my daughters has fnally gotten by the bug and is reading them. I’d love to see more.

I have read all her books and I have seen nothing since 2016 ! It would be nice of her to let the public know if she has given up writing ?
Well she did write What Rose Forgot in 2019. I haven’t been able to find out any information about any future books.
I loved all of her books but really loved What Rose Forgot!, I hope that she continues to write fabulous novels!
My all time favorite author. Waiting patiently for new stuff from her fertile mind or Sitting by my mental campfire waiting for more or burning my face at a lake drowning worms hoping I don’t have to clean fish
Which was the first book in which paraplegic, Heath, and her adopted daughter, Elizabeth appeared? Are there really not going to be any more Anna Pigeon books?
Sylvia: The book is Hard Truth. I also wonder if she’s stopped writing Anna Pidgeon books, as the last one was written in 2016.
