Nick Bradley is an accomplished published author.

He was born in Germany in 1982 but grew up in Bath. Nick attended higher learning and graduated with a master’s degree in English literature. After that he decided to move to Japan. He lived and worked there for a period of time before he came back to the United Kingdom so that he could go to obtain a Creative Writing MA degree at UEA.

Nick has held many different jobs throughout the course of his life and done many different things besides writing books! He has been an English teacher, a Japanese teacher, a travel writer, a video game translator, and a photographer.

Nick is a fluent speaker of Japanese and even has a PhD from UEA that is focused on the cat figure in Japanese literature. This influenced his first novel, The Cat in the City, a work that he followed up with his book Four Seasons in Japan. He has also translated the work ‘I Am a Cat’ by Natsume Sōseki.

These days, he teaches at the University of Cambridge as part of their Creative Writing master’s program. He was named one of the ten Rising Stars in UK Writing by The National Centre for Writing and The British Council. His work has done very well and reached many different readers as a result of being translated into twenty languages and counting.

This is the story about a character named Ayako, a strict and fierce older woman who stays busy running a coffee shop in Onomichi. There she has just taken over the guardianship position for her grandson Kyo.

The two of them have long been haunted by a long buried family tragedy and have gone through a lot of loss. They both feel that they have problems opening up to the other and are struggling to bridge the distance between them.

Flo ends up following the characters over the course of a year in rural Japan. She goes through the ups and downs of their relationship as things start out and begins to realize that she might need to go further outside of its pages in order to track down this author.

But as things go on, she and the reader might just end up finding out that there is more that the two have in common with the life of the translator than was apparent at first. As the lines between text and translator come together, it appears that the journey has just begun.
