The British author Nick Lake has become well known for his unique brand of contemporary thriller fiction and Young Adult novels. Filling his books with exciting twists and turns, he always manages to keep the reader hooked at every single turn of the page. This has proven to be hugely successful with a worldwide audience, creating fun and action that’s highly imaginative.

Interested in the Far East, he’s taken this passion and put it into his work, as his stories are authentic and well realized. Coming from the world of publishing himself, his writing is grounded and well paced too, capturing the readers attention from the very beginning. It is because of this that he continues to draw in readers, as his audience grows around the world with more and more discovering him every day.

Early and Personal Life:

Born and raised in the town of Hexham, England, in 1979, the author to be Nick Lake would grow up with a strong passion for reading and writing. Inspired by his love of writers such as Stephen King and Haruki Murakami to name a few, he would carefully hone this passion over the years. In time he would find his own voice, one that really spoke directly to the reader in an engaging and interesting manner.

Attending high-school in Luxembourg, he would later go on to graduate from Oxford University with both a degree and a masters in phonetics. This would allow him to find himself as a writer more, going on to become a book editor, all the while working on his stories. Constantly studying, he’d be continually looking for new ways to improve himself and his craft as a writer.

Working for the HarperCollins, he would soon find himself in the world of publishing, immersing himself heavily in literature. Still working as an editorial director there, he continues to invest himself in his craft, putting out novels at a regular pace. Knowing the industry inside and out, he creates stories and worlds that are quite unlike any other, whilst using inspirations from his own life too.

Living in Oxfordshire with his wife, an English teacher, he continues to progress himself as a writer with something to say. Always looking for the next big idea, he uses his own interests and passions to fuel him, such as his love of the Far East. With a lot more to come yet, he’s not stopping anytime soon, with his career growing from strength-to-strength.

Writing Career:

In 2009 Nick Lake would write his first novel titled ‘Blood Ninja’, and this would also be the first in a series of books with the same name. This would be inspired by his love of the Far East, and it would later be followed up with ‘Lord Oda’s Revenge’ in 2010, and ‘The Betrayal of the Living’ in 2012. Making up a complete trilogy, it would mark his arrival as a writer, establishing his presence upon the literary scene.

During 2009 Nick Lake would also write his first stand-alone fictional title called ‘The Secret Ministry of Frost’. Using elements of fantasy he’d tell the story of an Inuit trying to find her place in the world, as she embarks on a fantastical quest. This would later be followed up with ‘In Darkness’ in 2012, which would embark into the field of Young Adult fiction more.

Combining his love of different cultures and ideas, Nick Lake is continually taking the reader in new and exciting directions with his literature. The themes and ideas themselves always ring true though, resonating with readers worldwide, regardless of where they’re from. Writing strong characters that really stand out from the page, he’s managed to speak to the reader in a way not many other writers do.

His work has been lauded by both critics and the general public alike, with many singing his praises from all over. Winning numerous awards for his work, he’s received the ‘Michael L Printz Award’ in 2012, and the Carnegie Medal as well. This will continue for a long time yet, as there’s plenty more books planned on the horizon, as he carries on writing.

The Betrayal of the Living

First published in 2012 on the 7th of August, this would finalize the ‘Blood Ninja’ series of books, this being the third part of the trilogy. Continuing on from the last one, it would provide a story in a similar vein to before, giving the readers more of what they want. A fun fantasy adventure for younger readers, it immerses itself in the folklore of the Far East, something which Lake is well accustomed with.

Finding a number of big decisions laying before him, Taro finds himself in need of direction following the vanquishing of Lord Oda. With no land to his name, which he needs to marry Hana, he heads off to defeat a dragon with a big reward, as his friends follow along. Looking to save the fate of thousands of people, the fate of Japan rests in their hands as they undertake this most dangerous quest. Not only that, but Kenji Kira has risen the dead in order to fight them, as they have Taro set firmly in their sights. Will they succeed in their quest and save the day? Can Taro marry Hana? What will become of Kenji and the betrayal of the living?

There Will Be Lies

First released in 2015 on the 6th of January through the Bloomsbury USA Children’s publishing label, this would come out to much acclaim. Being a stand-alone title from the award winning author, it would be an entirely self-contained narrative, not being a part of any overall series. Using an action packed thriller mystery as its premise, it would be aimed at younger readers again too.

After being hit by a car, Shelby Jane Cooper is on the run with her mother following her being discharged from the hospital. There are dangers after them that only her mother knows about, and it seems that Shelby doesn’t know everything yet. Questioning everything about her, Shelby must now come to terms with a whole new world that is now alien to her? Will they manage to get to safety? Can she ever learn the truth? What will happen to Shelby knowing there will be lies?
