Nicky Drayden
Nicky Drayden is a fiction writer recognized for her weird books that do not fall in any genre. A talented writer, Drayson’s books alternate between science fiction and mystery to form compelling pieces. She is also masterful when it comes to descriptions and world-building, which works to draw in readers into her fantasy creations. When not writing, Drayden works as a System Analyst, where she spends her time buried in code.

The Prey of Gods
The Prey of Gods is set in South Africa, where personal robots perform numerous tasks for the working class. The year is 2064, and the future looks bright for the poor as well. The government is making use of re-usable energy to supply the infrastructure they need. In Port Elizabeth, the genetic engineering sector has done a lot of good for the economy. The inhabitants of this coastal town and the rest of South Africa are looking forward to better times in the future. If only there were a way to overcome the present challenges.

There is a new drug in town, and it is widely spreading to other parts of the country. The hallucinogen is affecting many households, and there is no telling how much damage will be documented in the future. There is also an AI uprising that is just emerging as well as a demigoddess who wants nothing but to regain her previous status, whatever it takes. In the present, the demigoddess is preying on humans for their blood and sweat. Her presence is staring to cause panic, especially because she always strikes when its least expected.

The fate of South Africa’s future rests on a young Zulu girl. Imperfect in every sense of the word, the teen has one outstanding talent, the ability to control other people’s minds. You will get to see Nomvula struggle to relate to her mother as she puts her special skills into good use. She will have to deal with the demigoddess who is keen to use the hallucinogen dubbed Godsend and a deadly virus designed to cull dik-diks to get her way.

This book puts together five unusual characters. First, there is Muzi, a teenager who has just experienced the different effects of the new hallucinogenic drug. Next is Nomvula, otherwise known as the girl with golden eyes. Then there is Riya, a famous pop singer who suffers from serious daddy issues and Stoker, the councilman who turns into something completely different at night. Lastly, there is Sydney, a woman who is all too happy to consume the fear of dying humans. All these characters interact in a world where robots run the show, and most people can afford to live in comfort.

The Prey of Gods comes with a captivating plot and a good dose of wry humor. The author succeeds in blending mythology, fiction, and fantasy into one intriguing story. The paranormal entities and the setting give this book an edge, and the intense pace from start to finish transforms it into a page-turner. If you are in the mood for a fantastic book made up of multiple genres, this is an ideal choice. The book comes loaded with interesting characters, great concepts, and best of all, stellar writing.

Temper
Temper tells the story of two brothers with seven vices and demonic possession. Auben Mutze comes with six vices, and he cannot deal with all six of them. The unfortunate thing is that Mutze’s vices are branded on his arm, so the world knows exactly who he is even before he utters a word. To the society, he is the lesser twin, and while he has no way to change other people’s perception of who he is, he doesn’t let the judgment wear him down. Despite his weaknesses, Mutze is outgoing and intelligent, and his spirited antics earn him a place among the most famous people in his school.

Mutze’s twin Kasin is an entirely different person. The boy’s only weakness is wanting a ticket to a better life, one that possibly doesn’t involve his twin. The two young men have a strained relationship, and while Mutze is jealous of his brother, he has been okay just ignoring him and socializing with his peer. However, Mutze has been hearing voices, and if he is to act on his thoughts, there is no doubt that the strained relationship will snap.

Mutze’s voices are speaking to his evil side. Aside from the mischief, he regularly gets into to irritate his brother; the voices are encouraging him to go further. Deceit, lust, and then inexplicable craving for blood. The demons talking to Mutze are getting maddening, but he knows all too well that acting according to them will mean that he will lose everything in the end. Will Mutze do as the demons are encouraging, or will he be considerate of his brother? How will Kasin respond to his twin, who seems to be getting worse by the day? Where will Mutze find blood to quench his thirst?

Temper is set in South Africa in the city of Cape Town. In this book, this town is among the few that were not colonized. The other outstanding thing about the city is that everyone has a twin. The author will introduce you to this town, its mysteries, history, and magic. There is also information on the religion and science conflicts that exist in Cape Town. Everything about the setting is fascinating. From the magical school that comes with flying librarians to the demons that arise in different seasons, this book is beautifully bizarre. All the characters come with their fair share of vices, but they all try to do better. At the heart of the book is a story about siblings, whose characters are worlds apart.

This is yet another genre-defying piece by Nicky Drayden. Filled with plot twists, intriguing characters, and an intense pace, this book is sure to leave a mark. Pick it if you are looking for something weird, intense, and unpredictable. The author is talented, and her narration, coupled with her sense of humor, will ensure that you never have a dull moment reading this book.
