Saving Sarah
Saving Sarah is the first book in Redemption series by Nicola Marsh. This book is about guilt, loss, family, forgiveness, and finding the inner strength to allow yourself to love, be loved and face your fears. The story is narrated from various points of views, and the novel has an added bonus of two happily ever after for the fantastic characters. In the story, we are introduced to Sarah Hardy who has had the biggest loss that any woman could bear-losing her three-year-old daughter. She is heartbroken and blames herself for not being there when her child needed her the most. What seemed to be a happy marriage was now already on the rock for some years before her daughter’s (Lucy) death and its now over, and Sarah is looking for a way to hide from the pain in Redemption, Connecticut in the little home that her grandmother left for her.
Not sure or ready that she will ever find love, be able to face children again or find something good for herself, Sarah is thrust back into the realm of the living. When an adorable little six-year-old body Olly shows up at her home one afternoon, insinuating his way into Sarah’s hear and making her face her fears.
On the other hand, we meet Jake Mathieson- a man who has had his share of life troubles just like Sarah. He blames himself for the airplane crash that left 89 passengers dead. He is forced to put his self-loathing and pain aside when his beloved sister calls him to take her son Olly while she tries to figure out her life and get it back on track. Not knowing what to do with this little young man, Jake call his aunt Cilla- the person who took care of him for so long and hasn’t seen for 18years- to help take care of Olly. Along the way, Jake starts falling in love strongly with Sarah. Unfortunately, his past mistakes make him feel unworthy of both happiness and love.
Aunt Cilla lost her beloved husband to suicide two decades ago, she was belittled, abused, and she was admonished by him for her entire married life. When the man died, she not lost her husband but also her beloved daughter who blames her for not being strong enough to walk away from the man who abused her and she also lost the beloved nephew and niece who were her arrays of sunshine. But when an old acquaintance of her daughter comes knocking on her door- flirty mouthed- and wanting to take her out, she is frightened, flattered, and confused. There is an 18 year age gap between Cilla and the man (Bryce) and the man is her daughter’s first crush. Could something happen between Cilla and the handsome man so much younger than her?
As Sarah, Jake and Cilla work through their fears and doubt, work on believing and trusting that they are worthy, they might just discover that there light at the end of the tunnel and that love, peace, and a happily after ever happiness can be found in Redemption, Connecticut.
The first book in Redemption series is a wonderful read. It’s true that both Sarah and Jake had such a strong connection, shared fears and pain of unworthiness and Olly is the only buffer for the two, allowing them to face their fears, ease into the relationship and learn to trust.
