The debut book of the Obsidian series written by authors James Mallory and Mercedes Lackey is entitled ‘The Outstretched Shadow’. This book was released by the Tor Books in 2003. The story revolves around the lead character named Kellen Tavadon. At the start of the book’s story, Kellen Tavadon is introduced as the Arch Mage Lycaelon’s son. His father was the leader of the benevolent and wise Mages’ Council and Kellen thought he knew everything about the working of the world. The citizens of the Bells’ Golden City were guided and protected by Kellen Tavadon’s father. The young Mages under training comprised of only men as women were not considered fit for practicing magic. The trainees were made to memorize the High Magic details, after which they were considered fit enough to join the council. Later in the story, Kellen Tavadon comes across the Wild Magic Books, which were regarded as forbidden. The contents of the 4 volumes made Kellen aware of the harsh truths of the world outside of the City. He learned that people over there also knew Magic, but they were not free to use them because of the various regulations laid down by the Council. While reading the Books, Kellen felt as if the Magic was a real living thing and that it is guided by only those who benefited from its practice. As the story proceeds further, Kellen becomes aware of all the dark secrets of the City. The Council banishes him from the City as soon as they learn about his knowledge of the dark secrets. An Outlaw Hunt is ordered to kill him, but Kellen runs away. He realizes that his life has changed faster than he had imagined. He comes across a Wild Mage, who seems to know a lot about him. Kellen also meets the Elven warriors. He goes on to realize that he has entered a world where he can interact with the magical beings that he used to think were abstract. On one hand, Kellen enjoys his new freedom, and on the other he fears that he might land his life in danger because of the wild magic around him.
The second volume of this series is entitled ‘To Light a Candle’. It was published by the Tom Doherty publication in 2004. At the beginning of the story of this book, Kellen Tavadon is shown as becoming the Knight Mage at a young age. He is praised for his skills and his bravery as a warrior and a wizard. He also joins the war councils of the Elves. When Kellen learns that a danger is about to strike Golden City, he warns that Mage Council. But, they do not pay any heed to his warnings and it becomes very difficult for him to convince them. The sister of Kellen, named Idalia, possesses the power of healing. She falls in love with an Elven warrior named Jermayan. Idalia is destined to pay heavily for saving the world with her Wild Magic, but until that day comes she wants to cherish all the joys that come her way. Jermayan gets bonded to a dragon while attempting to save the Prince, and because of this he changes into the first Mage of Elves in one thousand years. Demon Queen becomes very furious at this and attacks with her full force. Kellen is all prepared to face the attack and save Jermayan and Idalia from Demon Queen’s wrath.
