Primarily known as a television personality as well as a writer, the American author Oliver North is well known for his military service as he is his writing. Spending over twenty-three years serving in the United States Marine Corps. He went on to become a New York Times best-selling author on numerous occasions, with his work reaching a worldwide audience. Not only that but he has also been involved in politics in the past, as well as hosting his television shows.

Early and Personal Life

With his date of birth being in 1943 on the 7th of October, Oliver North was born in the area of San Antonio, Texas, in the United States.

Graduating in 1961 from the Ockawamick Central High School, he grew up in the region of Philmont in New York. After this, he went to Brockport where he attended the State University of New York for two years in total. Throughout his education though he retained a strong interest in advancing his military career, such as his appointment in 1963 at the United States Naval Academy.

With a career in the United States Marine Corps, he was to get a clear idea of how the military operated. All of this was to then go back into his books, effectively informing both his style and his tone throughout them all. During this time he’d also get an insight into the mentality and mindset of of this world, which would also weigh heavily on his work in due course.

Marrying Betsy Stuart in 1967 they soon went on to have four children, as he still lives with her to this very day. Continuing to write, as well as maintaining a career in television hosting, he keeps himself active with several different pursuits. With more expected to come from him shortly, it looks like he will be writing for some time yet.

Writing Career

Already a public figure, with a large amount of exposure both on television and on the radio, Oliver North’s career as a writer had a head-start from the release of his first book. Focusing on what he’d mostly come to be known for, he would continually return to themes of the American military and patriotism, something that his readers had come to expect with his writing. Analyzing global issues affecting the military, he was able to take his experiences and put them into his work, providing them with a foundation that wouldn’t otherwise have been there.

Selling his books on a worldwide scale, it’s not just American audiences that these books have been read by. Whilst he uses his unique experiences within the army, they use the typical conventions of the thriller model to make them more commercial.

Writing newspaper columns as well, he soon began to build a considerable following from those looking to gain insight through his perspective. Whether they be stories inspired by his time serving, or reports from the front-line whilst reporting for television channels such as the Fox News Network, his output has been consistent over the many years of his career. This only looks set to continue in the years to come as well, as he doesn’t appear to be stopping any time soon, with more books to follow on the horizon.

The Assassins

Originally published in 2005 on the 3rd of October, this was to be the third book in his Peter Newman series. Setting up the next installment works at capturing the essence of the previous two novels, giving his readers more of what they’ve now come to expect. With the character of Peter Newman already firmly established too, it goes straight into the story, further developing his arc along the way.

Starting with the protagonist General Peter Newman once again, the story is set in 2007, following the anniversary of the sixth year since the September 11th attacks. After an attack in Saudi Arabia by Jihadists looking to cut the oil pipelines, all whilst assassinating the majority of the royal family there, oil prices are now at an all-time high. That’s where Peter Newman must rally the ‘Threat Mitigation Unit’ to ensure that the terrorists are punished for what they did. Will he be able to complete the task? Can he ensure his safety throughout? What will become of him as he proceeds to organize the assassins?

Counterfeit Lies

Brought out through the Threshold Editions publishing label on the 10th of June, this was a book that was written alongside Bob Hamer. Written by someone at the peak of his writing career, this thriller provides all that his readers have now come to expect from him as an author. With its fast-paced style and tone, it manages to utilize North’s experiences whilst serving, as it informs much of the action throughout.

Featuring Jake Kruse as an FBI agent going undercover, it sees him dealing with a smuggling ring in the location of Southern California, an operation which seems to be going smoothly, that is until he’s given a proposition by a highly prominent criminal defense attorney. Asked to kill the daughter of a local crime boss, he’s plunged head-first into a predicament that may threaten to engulf him, whilst compromising his identity as well. Dealing with a web of lies, deceit, and corruption, he must navigate himself through this murky underworld of terrorists and contract killings, all whilst keeping his head above water throughout. Will he be able to uncover the truth and bring the correct people to justice? Can he remain cool-headed and save himself in the process? What will become of him as he sorts the facts from the counterfeit lies?
