With his father Oliver Clay North also being stationed in the army as a U.S. Army major, a life in the military almost seemed inevitable to him too. Growing up with many of these ideals, they would inspire him to follow in a similar path, feeding back into his material along the way.

Graduating in 1961 from the Ockawamick Central High School, he grew up in the region of Philmont in New York. After this he went to Brockport whereby he attended the State University of New York for a period of two years in total. Throughout his education though he retained a strong interest in advancing his military career, such as his appointment in 1963 at the United States Naval Academy.

With a career in the United States marine corps, he was to get a clear idea of how the military actually operated. All of this was to then go back into his books, effectively informing both his style and his tone throughout them all. During this time he’d also get an insight into the mentality and mindset of of this world, which would also weigh heavily on his work in due course.

Writing Career

Already being a public figure, with a large amount of exposure both on television and on radio, Oliver North’s career as a writer definitely had a head-start from the release of his first book. Focusing on what he’d mostly come to be known for, he would continually return to themes of the American military and patriotism, something which his readers had come to expect with his writing. Analyzing global issues affecting the military, he was able to take his experiences and put them into his work, providing them with a foundation that wouldn’t otherwise have been there.

Selling his books on a worldwide scale, it’s not just American audiences that these books have been read by. Whilst he uses his unique experiences within the army, they use the typical conventions of the thriller model to make them more commercial. Writing for a number of years now, he has got his own formula with which he works by, something which his readers have continued to navigate towards.

Writing newspaper columns as well, he soon began to build a considerable following from those looking to gain insight through his perspective. Whether they be stories inspired by his time serving, or reports from the front-line whilst reporting for television channels such as the Fox news network, his output has been consistent over the many years of his career.
