Simple Jess
Simple Jess is the second novel in the Tales from Marrying Stone series. Althea’s husband passed away two years ago, leaving her with a three-year-old boy. Her husband was one of the richest farm owners in the area. Althea has no plans of getting remarried and wants to be left alone to raise her son how she sees fit.
However, it’s becoming hard to run her farm, look after her son and withstand the demands of collecting firewood and food for the winter. Planning to stay in control so decides to sell her pack of hunting dogs.
She doesn’t want someone to marry and take what belongs to her because she’s keeping everything on the farm as her son’s inheritance in the future.
However, the two family clans want an eligible bachelor to marry Althea. So during one of the Autumn nights, they come together and give Althea an ultimatum that she has to find a husband by Christmas or else the town will have to find one for her.
They point out two suitors and tell her she has to pick one before Christmas. Will she choose Oather Philips or Eben Baxley, or she’ll end up picking the man who seems reliable? Althea knows she has a chance for every man in Marrying Stone Town.
However, the only man she felt comfortable around was Simple Jess. Jess has always had three goals: to own a dog, a gun and a wife. He approaches her when he hears that Althea is planning on selling the dogs her husband left.
However, Althea offers Jess all the dogs if he’ll help in doing the heavy work that she cannot do. He will have to work on the farm until it is set for the oncoming winter. Yearning to earn a living like other men and excited to own all the dogs, Jess accepts the offer.
Simple Jess was a gentleman but wasn’t as smart as an average man. However, his good manners aroused something inside Althea in ways she had never thought. It’s a miracle to find a husband in Marrying Stone, but sometimes we don’t see the miracles that are close.
Althea has always thought that being alone is better than depending on someone. She has always felt unwanted after her father abandoned her after remarrying. She appeared as the spare relative and had to prove her worth around him constantly.
Althea doesn’t want her son to get the same feeling that why she jealously protects him. However, when Jesse showed up in her life and proved to her that it was fine to trust someone else with her son and everything she holds dear.
The story is set in the town of Marrying Stone in the Ozarks in 1906. The simplicity of the residents and the strength of Jess, as Althea sees him as more than the muscle she needs on the farm, makes the story fascinating. Jess is the man Althea needs in her life, as he’s a keeper.
He is frustrated with how other people have been treating him, taking advantage of him for his weakness. Althea wishes she could change people’s thinking about him and finally see him for who he is.
Jess serves as the reminder of the things we come across in life as pure items of worth and beauty that seem sem ignored when we look on the horizon. His heart Is filled with love, and he is the kind of man one can trust to fulfil his promises.
Jess’ ability to forgive isn’t based on his low intelligence but the strength of his heart. When he knew that Althea needed help, he gave it to her with very little in return.
Courting Miss Hattie
News travels fast through the county after widower Ancil Drayton states his intention to court Miss Hattie Colfax. Miss Hattie has been running her family farm with no help from anyone; however, she is now a twenty-nine lady farmer who hasn’t been lucky to find a husband yet.
She is a strong woman respected by everyone in town due to her personality, which hasn’t brought any suitors around. She has been single for a long time despite her hard work until she catches the eye of a widowed farmer with seven children. The farmer is desperately looking for a mother for his children, so he begins courting Miss Hattie with plans of getting married.
Reed Tyler has been working on Miss Hattie’s farm for a long time and dreams of settling down on his land with a beautiful woman he had planned to marry. Hattie was like a sister to him as he could tell her his troubles and hopes.
He thought so until Ancil Drayton’s idea of courting her made him seethe. When a friendly peck turned into a scorching kiss, Reed realized that his best friend would make a perfect woman for him.
People think Hattie isn’t interested in romance in life, but that’s not the case, as she looks forward to having a family. When the widower approaches, intending to court her, she is more than happy.
Miss Hattie never got a chance to enjoy romance because she started looking after her mother after her father died. This left her no time to look for a suitor.
On the other hand, Reed is 24 and currently engaged to a beautiful fiancée. He has known Hattie his entire life and is planning on buying her farm and doesn’t seem happy when Ancil starts courting her.
They’ve been great friends, and he has dreams of planting rice on the farm once he owns it. Hattie is aware she isn’t beautiful and has to get used to being called Horse face behind her back her entire life. So when someone shows interest in her, she sees it as an opportunity to have a life she has always admired.
Will Reed finally get to marry Hattie in the end?
