Paul L. Thompson was born and grew up on a farm and ranch in New Mexico, and he only uses true locations in each of his novels. The name of towns are the exact same as in the 1880s, some are ghost towns now while others grew into our modern cities of modern day.

He writes “true” historical western fiction. Each of the locations is, or was, true to the times 1870s through 1912. Names of towns which no longer exist (or names that have been changed) are brought to life right before your very eyes. Canyons, creeks, and towns that you may have walked through on your vacation in the southwest are all named correctly.

Every location that gets used in one of his novels might be visited today. Much of the country Thompson writes about, he has rode over while on horseback multiple times.

Before he begins writing his novels, he did fifteen years of extensive research on top of the knowledge that he already gained from living in New Mexico. His love of horses, cattle, and the entire southwest, with its wide-open spaces, inspired him to write novels which express the beauty of the Southwest in print.

“Black Ranger Silver” is the second novel in the “Tales of the Old West/Shorty Thompson” series and was released in 2003. President Hayes sent word to US Marshal Short Thompson at old Fort Tularosa, New Mexico Territory. He was supposed to investigate why so many mine owners were ending up dead. Also as he was there, learn why ore samples don’t match the ore quality when it arrives to US Government Mints in California and Nevada.

During his investigation, as he rides down Burns Gulch, Shorty’s shot in the head and lays in a coma for more than a month. When he comes to, he’s got no memory of who he is or why he’s even there.

“Young Jesse Owens” is the fourteenth novel in the “Tales of the Old West/Shorty Thompson” series and was released in 2007. Jesse Owens was just nine years old when his family pulled up their deep roots in their Tennessee Valley coal mining town, and headed west. Jesse, while riding on a borrowed horse, got to ride drag with the outriders. In Oklahoma Territory, he shot this outlaw right in the back as he saved one of his fellow outriders.

Outlaws abducted Jesse’s sisters and a couple of the Stillwell girls in the Texas Panhandle, while the men of the wagon train were off wiping this Comanchero camp out.

Delbert Fleming and Jesse rode hard to pursue the kidnappers. They found the outlaw camp right around midnight and Jesse snuck in to get the girls, and ran off the outlaw’s horses. Jesse was a hero now, at least in the eyes of his sister and the rest of the girls in the wagon train.

“A Long Train Ride Home” is the 123rd novel in the “Tales of the Old West/Shorty Thompson” series and was released in 2023. Shorty stepped down off the train in Calgary, Canada. He was tired down to the bone after he switched trains five times and sat on this hard seat for twelve days without much sleep for more than two thousand miles.

The Canadian Government had allowed the United States come all the way to Calgary after Nathanial Grossmont. This man had escaped from prison in Canon City, Colorado and went back and murdered the judge that sentenced him, along with the judge’s own wife.

Shorty’s orders from Captain Hardesty was to bring Nathanial back alive to Colorado whatever the costs. This man has to be hung for what he’s done and never given the opportunity to ever escape again. Four guards got knocked out and left lying in a field. Judge Ryder and the man’s wife, Francine, would both be alive today if he’d just hung Grossmont and been done with it.

“Too Young To Kill” is the 124th novel in the “Tales of the Old West/Shorty Thompson” series and was released in 2023. It took a week for Karl and Frank Lang to round up and separate 170 head of cattle that they were taking to this waiting buyer they had in Amarillo, Texas. It’d be four or five days of slow driving in order to take this herd the 25 miles south.

The hardest part would be that it was just two men and one ten year old boy taking them. Cody, the ten year old boy and his dog, named Pup, would lead out, with the cattle following them. The second night that camp was made and cattle circled and bedded down. Frank (Cody’s grandpa) bragged on how well they did that day. He said they could not ask for better, as he was keeping the right speed.

The very next morning after coffee and breakfast were over, these seven riders came firing guns and stampeded their cattle. Karl and Frank grabbed their guns and promptly got shot down. That shooter sat on his horse, looking down at a scared Cody. Told him that he was too young to kill and to get.

Cody told him to get that he was checking on his dad and Grandpa. Clete just laughed, turned his horse, and headed after his men and the running cattle.

“Kill That Senator” is the 125th novel in the “Tales of the Old West/Shorty Thompson” series and was released in 2023. The US Senate was in session and the senators were yelling back and forth. Jack Dorsey (the Senate Majority Leader) banged that gavel over and over shouting about how the bickering won’t get anything done.

For as long as he’s Senate Majority Leader this bill is never being brought to the floor for a vote. Never are the American taxpayers going to liable for ten or so million dollars for a private industry to be able to get filthy rich without any oversight from this body as to what this ten million bucks is going to be used for.

He then says that the senate’s in recess to allow everybody to hit the campaign trail. Then he wishes them good luck on their re-election. He banged his gavel again. And then the yelling and screaming really began.
