It is owned by Holly Miller, who hails from the tourist town of Wagtail in Virginia where her inn is also located. The situation turns panicky when it is learned that a killer is roaming freely in the town.

Holly Miller decides to take things in her own hands and catch the murderer to help bring things to normal in her tourist town. All her life she has been surrounded by dogs. With no job at hand, her boyfriend’s ex-flame sniffing around, and her loveable Jack Russell, Trixie, scattering dirt and litter in her car very often, she thinks that her life could not get worse. Just then, she gets a troubling call from her grandmother, who asks her to come rushing to the family inn based on Wagtail Mountain. As Holly Miller and her dog are welcomed by the inn’s staff and her grandmother’s kitten Twinkletoes, she hears the shocking news of the killing of an employee in a car accident. Initially, the case appeared to be a hit-and-run, but when Holly Miller looks into the matter carefully, she discovers that the employee was murdered. Joined by the furry companions, Holly Miller sets out to track down the culprit and catch him before another murder takes place in the town.

Another interesting installment of this series is called ‘The Ghost and Mrs. Mewer’. It was also published by Berkley in 2014. Once again, Holly Miller and her pets are depicted in central roles. Initially, it is shown that the guests in Sugar Maple Inn claim that there is the presence of spirits in the inn. But, Holly doesn’t pay any heed to their claims thinking that they are just rumors. A TV series is in development as the town gears up for the annual festivities of Halloween. Holly Miller is asked to help the crew and ghost-hunters in investigating the supernatural presence. Later, a young lady is found dead by Holly’s pets in the bathhouse of the Springs Hotel in Wagtail. The place is considered to be the most haunted spot in the entire town. Thus, the claims of supernatural presence begin to be taken more seriously.

When Holly Miller arrives at the crime scene, she discovers that attempts have been made to make it look like a creepy legend. This makes her even more convinced that it is not the work of any spirit, rather a dangerous killer is present among the people of the town. Subsequently, she indulges in a race against time to hunt the culprit before another innocent person ends up dead. Also, Holly Miller tries to put a stop to the claims of the spirits’ presence in the town by proving that the woman was murdered by a human and not by any ghost.
