Peter Turner was an English author of biographies and non-fictions famously known for his memoir on Gloria Grahame, a talented actress who spent the last days of her life with the author and his family. The memoir titles Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool was later adapted to a movie. Turner has also written a few guides for travellers to New Zealand, among other works.
Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool
Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool is a memoir centred on Gloria Grahame, a talented Hollywood actress who lived a colorful life. Peter received a life-changing phone call on the 29th of September 1981. The caller confirmed that his former lover, Gloria Grahame, had collapsed in a hotel. Her life was obviously in danger, and the, strangely enough, is that she refused medical attention. Grahame left Turner with no choice but to accommodate her in his Liverpool family’s home.
Turner first set his eyes on Grahame at the start of his acting career in London. While Turner was new in the industry, Grahame was already a star in Hollywood and had experienced her fair share of the showbiz craze. Grahame was best known for bringing heroines to life in films like The Bad and the Beautiful, Oklahoma, and The Big Heat. She was already an Oscar winner when she and Turner met. Even though the love affair did not last, Turner and Grahame remained friends. In the end, it is Turner who saved her from herself and stepped up in her time of need.
Film Stars Don’t Die in Liverpool is a fascinating yet affectionate story of love, friendship, and stardom. Towards the end, the story gets sad as the writer highlights the last days of this talented star that enjoyed a fascinating career but lived a chaotic life. In the beginning, Turner did not understand why Grahame pushed his away. It is only much later when Grahame reenters her life that he knows that was suffering from cancer, but he wanted to keep this information to herself.
While many people know about Grahame’s controversial marriages and drastic attempts to change how she looked, very little is known about her later days. Turner sheds some light on the actress’s final days and the differences between the quiet and lonely life she led towards the end as opposed to the activity-packed and chaotic life in her heydays. This book is a fascinating homage to Grahame’s life that her fans will, without a doubt, fall in love with. The story is told by someone who cared about Grahame deeply and also identified with the challenges that most stars face in their personal lives.
The author highlights how hard it is to care for a terminally ill patient who insists she is okay. Turner loved Grahame deeply even though the two had broken up a long time ago. The story also shows how Turner’s family was willing to help and care for a Grahame, even if they did not know her well. We see how Turner struggles to go and perform when someone he loves is facing death in his home. From the story, it is clear that theater is very unforgiving, and those who get into the acting career have to sacrifice a lot to stay relevant in this industry. A great read. It is refreshing that a talented star found a caring friend to walk with her in her last days on earth.
