.
Into The Vampire City

Into The Vampire City is the first book in the Human Revolt series. We meet Sarah Brown, a seventeen-year-old whose father vanished without a trace. She links her father’s disappearance to his latest investigation on a new drug, dubbed Blood Dust. When Serah’s father goes missing, the young girl is left without a family, and being a minor, the government plans to place Serah with a family. However, to everyone’s surprise, Serah opts to be deported to her grandmother’s home in Miami.

Serah’s transportation to Miami AKA the vampire city sets this story in motion. The vampires of Miami have terrorized the public since they escaped from a coffin five years ago. After surfacing, a horrible war ensued, and in the end, the cities of Miami and Los Angeles were handed over to the vampire. After the war, walls were erected to protect the citizens from the leeches. These walls are guarded throughout to ensure that the citizens are protected from their blood-sucking neighbors. The only way for anyone to cross to the world of the vampires would be through deportation.

Despite her terror and the grief that comes with losing a parent, Serah sets to follow her father‘s trail in the hope that he will be found safe. While Sarah plans to lay low throughout her investigations, she attracts the attention of Cloud, and the more she digs, the more her she gets deeper into the dark world. Cloud, or The Dragon, as he is popularly known, is a seductive vampire and a Rebel group leader. The secrets Serah uncovers have the potential to trigger another Vampire war and reveal the circumstances that led to her parents’ disappearance.

The Vampire War has ended, and Miami has been given over to the undead. Those who are innocent live like animals and simply dance to the tune of their vampire masters. Just when the dust is settling, Serah enters the dark world and proves to be the greatest threat that powerful vampires and dark forces have ever known.

In Vampire City is the story of a brave young woman who has to deal with the loss of her parents and the emotions that come with adolescence in a dark vampire-filled future. It is a tale about mean and fanged vampires and an impulse yet brave teenage girl who is prepared to take them on. The cast is multicultural, and aside from the sidekicks, the characters come with varying complexity. Stella Brown is unlike the stereotyped black teenager. While she makes mistakes, it’s clear from the start that she is in charge. The story is captivating, and the bittersweet ending will make you look forward to reading the second book in this sequel

The Path of Flames

The Path of Flames is the first book in the Chronicles of the Black Gate series. It’s a tale of magic, sorcery, gates that lead to secret places, and planes that ascend and descend based on their actions when they were alive. The story starts with a war fueled by forbidden sorcery and dark forces. The Agerastian Heretics are determined to break the ancient portals uniting the empire and in so doing, completely destroy the empire. The war is characterized by mass carnage, magic, and sorcery, and at the end of it all, a lot of good characters end up dead.

The story is narrated from the perspectives of six characters who share their fascinating stories. There is Asho, a squire to a warlord named Ser Kyferin. Asho is a former slave, and the fact that he is dirt poor means that everyone treats him worse than vermin. This does not make this young man shy from doing his best, and when Asho gets out of the battle alive and does something that pleases the warlords, he is elevated to a knight. It is interesting to read how Asho interacts with heroes who are way above his standards way before he is promoted.

There is also Kethe and Iskra. Kethe is Ser Kyferin’s daughter. At just fifteen years in age, Kethe is sure that she wants to become a knight when she grows up. True to her words, she proves herself worthy of this honor, which is impressive in a world where women rarely, if ever, get to be elevated to knighthood. Iskra is Kethe’s mother and Ser Kyferin’s wife. Iskra is one strong woman, and she gracefully handles the curve balls that life throws at her. Iskra also comes with a likable personality. It is heartbreaking that she murdered in battle.

Other key characters include Sir Tiron, Audsley, and Tharok. Sir Tiron is a complex, multi-layered character with a likable personality. Whatever goes on inside Sir Tiron’s head is quite interesting. Audsley leads a sedentary academic life, and his main goal in life is to read any written material under the sun. Tharok is a highland Kragh. While his storyline seems vastly separate from others, things make sense towards the end of the book. Phil Tucker is masterful in his plotting, world-building, and character development, and the entire book is nothing short of a masterpiece.

The Path of Flames is an action-packed story that will leave you hooked from beginning to end. There is enough bromance and loyalty display scene to tug your heartstrings, and the diverse characters all turn this into an exciting read. If you are looking to engage yourself in a thrilling novel filled with magic, war, and awesome redemption scenes, The Path of Flames will deliver just that and so much more. For a self-published piece, the book stands out, and there is no doubt that if a publisher is involved, the book would feature among the best fantasy books of all time.
