R.L. Mathewson is a contemporary romance and paranormal romance author from New England best known for the “Pyte/Sentinel” and the “Neighbor from Hell” series of novels. Mathewson grew up a painfully shy nerd but things changed once she graduated from high school and went to college. She would then get a job as a museum worker, fast food cook, and bellhop and then EMT which got rid of all of her shyness. Some of the experiences and fond memories from her plethora of jobs can be seen in some of her novels. Her novels are characterized by a distinctive sense of humor and down to earth characters that get into steamy relationships with demons, vampires, and werewolves. She published her debut novel “Tall, Dark and Lonely” of the “Pyte/Sentinel” series in 2010 and has never looked back since. She now has more than thirty titles in the “Hollywood Hearts,” “Pyte/Sentinel,” “Neighbor from Hell,” “EMS,” “Cursed Hearts,” “Honeymoon from Hell,” “Anger Management” and “Neighbor from Hell YA” series. She has also written three collections of short stories. The single mother of two admits to a major hot chocolate and romance novel addiction, and a perfect day is when she can combine the two.
Mathewson always had a love for reading but this was rekindled in 2008, during a particularly hard time in her life. She was bedridden for nearly a year having slipped a disc that caused her so much pain, she could hardly move. It was also a time when she had been having issues with her marriage and had separated from her husband. Since she could only sit or lay on the bed, she had a lot of time on her hands and she used to read about a book every day to get away from all the pain and boredom. Some of the novels were really good but reading others, she felt aggravated as she felt she could do better. Grabbing her ice pack, she made her way to a desk and was soon hard at work penning her first manuscript. She initially intended to go the traditional publishing route but soon found that impossible as she thought it was too much hassle. She would have given up has it not been for her mother who encouraged her to continue writing since she enjoyed it. While Mathewson did not have much hope of ever becoming a professional author, she had no choice and kept writing hoping it would work out. Since it was almost impossible to find agents and visit publishers in her condition, she decided to self-publish on Amazon and Barnes and Noble. Once she got the ball rolling on Amazon, she got the confidence and continued pushing out novels that her fans loved.
R.L. Mathewson’s success comes from the fact that she has mastered the art of writing great romance novels that resonate with her audience. She writes likable, down to earth and flawed characters which is what makes them so human. Mathewson takes the time to create the connection between the characters rather than just flat out telling the reader about a relationship. The stories take the time to build the character profile and the storyline, while also being interesting and unpredictable since for the most part, they do not follow rules. The novels are not formulaic even though Mathewson writes a good plot in all of her novels. Rather than tell her readers that her characters are in love she teases it out and builds the suspense so that you can feel the love and romance as it grows. Nonetheless, she has asserted that she has fun doing it and is all about writing a romance that she loves since she knows that is the only way to please her readers.
“Tall, Dark & Lonely” by R.L. Mathewson tells the story of Madison, who has finally got her dream job after years of struggle. She is happy since she can now pay the down payment on a house where she can move her sister and brother that have never had a real home. But her mother who never cared for them suddenly shows up and picks her siblings moving them to New Hampshire. Madison has to either cast her dreams aside or risk losing her sister and brother. She tries to make everything work out though it is not so easy as she feels like an outsider since her boss is a total jerk, and her sister is behaving like a whore. Complicating matters even further is the incredibly handsome guy from next door who hogs the hot water leaving her with cold showers. The mysterious Detective Ephraim Williams has a secret and Madison is determined to unearth it. As for Williams, had long learned not to get too close to humans or show any emotion given that they always came and went unlike him. He is biding his time waiting for them to leave but what he does not know is that this time things are different. He had thought nothing of it when he was informed that the landlady’s children would be moving in. He never expected to have to fight bloodlust every time there was a whiff of Madison’s scent or when she cornered him on the yard and bombarded him with questions.
“Without Regret,” the second novel of the “Pyte/Sentinel” series by R.L. Mathewson is the story of Chris Williams, a man used to make sacrifices. For years, he had stood by his family as duty required and patiently waited for the person fate had set aside for him. Chris is looking forward to a life of bliss with a warrior that will stand by his side to protect his family and the people he had sworn to keep safe. However, when he finally meets the woman, she is nothing of the warrior he was expecting. Isabella is a computer geek that is on every Master’s hit list and Chris is dumbfounded as to how she could have achieved that. She admits to doing very foolish things but before they can begin undoing them, she is taken and held hostage by some crazy cult. It is clear that the cult is after one of the programs she had written but she is not planning on giving it t them no matter what. But as she is trying to stay calm and make her next move, she is claimed by the sexiest man she ever saw. But it is clear that he does not want her as he is not too thrilled when he is with her. But while he does not love her, he is stubborn and will not let her go which leaves her perplexed.
R.L. Mathewson’s “Tall, Dark & Heartless” is the story of a millennium-old Pyte named Caine who thinks he should have left and never come back. However, he never could leave Danni, the woman he loved and rather than walking away he had stayed behind, protecting the only human that had ever stolen his heart. He tells himself that he is only watching over her but deep in his heart he knows there is more to it. When she runs into some trouble, he knows that the best thing to do is to walk away and cut his losses. But he cannot fight the hold the young woman has over him and now his presence is causing her trouble. Meanwhile, Danni puts her life in danger since she is not a Sentinel yet goes out every night on patrol. However, that is not going to stop her as she is determined to do her job. It is the only thing that provides meaning in her life and she is never going to just let go without giving it her best shot. Unfortunately for Danni, she never thought her boyfriend would be captured, locked up and kept in a cell alongside a Pyte. She had once dated the Pyte and he had broken her heart. But he now will not stop giving her icy looks that seem to say that she is responsible for their quandary.
