Rachel Amphlett is a British born author currently residing in Brisbane Australia, best known for writing the Dan Taylor thriller series of novels. Before she became an author, Amphlett was guitar player in a band, film and TV extra, freelance producer with the BBC, radio presenter, and editorial assistant and sub editor. She also undertook several courses in publishing at the Oxford John Brookes University. She published her first novel “White Gold” in 2011 and has never looked back since. She now has several thriller spy and crime fiction series to her name including the “Detective Kay Hunter” series and fan favorite “Dan Taylor” techno thrillers. Growing up, Amphlett cites her biggest inspirations as Robert Ludlum, Lee Child, Ken Follett, and Michael Connelly among several other crime and detective fiction authors. Her novels have enjoyed much success and popularity across much of the Western world and have been translated into several languages in Europe. Her works have been a success in the United Kingdom the USA, Australia and Germany, where the Dan Taylor series was published by Luzifer Verlag the German publishers of Chris Ryan’s novels. The first novel of the series was sold to TIMECrime Imprint which translated it into Italian. Professionally, Rachel is a member of the Crime Writers Association, and the International Thriller Writers.
Rachel Amphlett’s novels are generally classified as thrillers though they are also demarcated into echo/techno thrillers in the “Dan Taylor” series and the detective crime thrillers of the “Detective Kay Hunter’ series. Rachel has always been a voracious reader and storyteller and by the time she was thirteen was tired of young adult fiction and pivoted to thrillers. Among her very first reads was the “Dick Francis” novels which were given to her by her grandfather before she moved on to “The Eagle has Landed” by Jack Higgins, which still remains one of her favorite novels of all time. As such, Jack Higgins is among the most influential authors in her writing career alongside the likes of Michael Connolly and Robert Crais. She loves Connolly for his great pacing of the story line and well-paced characters, and Crais for great balance of humor and action and excellent character definition. In 2009, she decided to finally get back to writing after several years in the professional scene and went to the Queensland Writer’s Center to get better mastery of her craft. The courses provided the necessary skills she needed to come back stronger into the writing field and make a success of herself in the United Kingdom, Australia and beyond.
The “Dan Taylor” series of novels by Rachel Amphlett is what would be called an eco or techno thriller series, given the large quantity of sophisticated weapons in the narratives. Rachel takes advantage of the increasing awareness of the issues and effects of climate change to write a series that has become a favorite among her fans. The “Dan Taylor” series is themed on issues of uncontrolled consumption of energy and includes the issues that could possibly come to bear when fossil fuel reserves get low or depleted. The series also talks about the aspects influencing the switchover to renewable and alternative energy sources. The lead in the series is Dan Taylor a young geologist that quits college to go become a soldier. It is an act of rebellion against the intimidating paternal shadow of his father who is a world renowned geologist. Taylor is recruited into the elite bomb squad and gets to work immediately getting himself injured and suffering from PTSD. He becomes a drifter with no direction in life until he learns that Peter Edgewater the scientist and once his very good friend had taken his own life. Taylor is incredulous about the circumstances of the death of his friend, and goes to visit his ex-wife to get her perspective on what might have happened. Together they begin an investigation and they set out on a very interesting quest. Soon after Taylor joins the Energy Protection Group for which he works for most of the of the series.
“White Gold” is the first novel of the Dan Taylor series of novels by Rachel Amphlett. It is an action packed debut that has often been compared to the likes of Jack Reacher by Lee Child and some of the best of Robert Ludlum and Vince Flynn. Taylor had been in the British Army and had been one of its best bomb disposal accidents, until an IED was mishandled killing three of his colleagues and scarring him for life. Taylor finds it difficult to cope with the PTSD, as he is haunted by nightmare and he becomes totally rudderless. But then a friend he has not seen for ages leaves a message on his machine only to be assassinated a few moments thereafter. Determined to find out what happened to his friend Peter Edgewater he finds himself deep into what turns out to be a global conspiracy that he finds in the copious research notes left behind by his friend. The notes ask Taylor to find some strange explosive device on its way to London, and currently in the possession of an evil organization.
“Under Fire” the second novel of the series opens to Dan Taylor receiving a call to go back to London where he is to undertake a very important and urgent assignment. He had no idea what the job entailed but leaves the desert and heads to the extreme cold and misery of a wintry London. But when his boss finally gives him a brief of the situation, he understands just how dangerous and precarious the situation is, though the threat has yet to be fully identified. Everything he ever believed would be tested to the ultimate, and he and the team would have to fight tooth and nail to protect what they hold dear. The explosion of a tanker that suddenly burst into flames to sink in the Persian Gulf confirms their suspicions. But before they can take action, an eminent scientist is kidnapped and the team scrambles to track him down before his knowledge may be used to cause even more havoc. Things are moving too fast and the team knows they may be running out of time to find the man responsible for the attacks on a cruise ship and the theft of a submarine in the Mediterranean. But have they got their targets right?
Just picked up the Kay Hunter series and have read five already. A nice read on my phone whenever I am free and a treat to immediately be swept up in the stories. It helps of course that I lived near the Maidstone area for forty years so makes a change to relate to names and places mentioned.
Thank you for writing them as I will start on Dan Taylor when this Kay Hunter series is complete.
Warmest regards
Chris
