Rachel Aukes
Rachel Aukes was raised on a farm in Iowa where she boasted the small town’s biggest (and only) comic book collection, and is still addicted to tales with bad ass heroes that face down impossible odds.
She did the college thing: both undergrad (go UNI Panthers!) and graduate (go Drake Bulldogs!). Before going out into the “real” world and figuring out that jobs are much too much work and too little pay.
Alas, bills (not to mention all of her college loans) needed to be paid, so she made a career out of helping companies navigate through change, which basically means she is a professional problem solver. In this role, she served as director of IT Strategy for Aviva North America, VP of Technology at Wells Fargo, and later as a change agent for companies across the United States. She has also taught at Upper Iowa University for more than a decade, warping the minds of tomorrow’s workforce. She is lucky to write full time and couldn’t imagine doing anything else.
Rachel loves flying airplanes, particularly the old stuff. Nothing beats a sunset flight going around the countryside. She’s sure that sunrise flights are equally as good, however she’s never been awake for one of those. Rachel loves spoiling her fifty-pound lap dog, who develops sudden cravings to go outside each and every five minutes when she finally gets deep into writing mode.
Because she’s always got the ideas dancing around her brain like fairies on speed, and she needs to get them down on paper where they want to be. She loves writing and is always inspired to write. It’s just finding the necessary time to sit down and write is a whole other story.
If she gets blocked, she will take a break by going for a walk or just sleeping on it. It is amazing how our brains can work plots out even when we are not concentrating on them. The other way she has to work through her writer’s block is to just plow right on through it, if she’s up against some hard deadline. Often times, while writing, things will work themselves right out. Sometimes, Rachel has to do some rewrites once things do work out. Either way, she will get to the end.
Rachel writes horror and science fiction because she absolutely loves playing the “what if…” game (and killing off people). Her work includes “100 Days in Deadland”, which was named on the USA Today recommended read and the Best Books of the Year list by Suspense Magazine.
Under the pen name of Berinn Rae, she writes science fiction romance, which includes “Stealing Fate”, a USA Today recommended read.
“100 Days in Deadland” is the first novel in the “Deadland” series and was released in the year 2013. A journey through Dante’s Inferno with a shambling twist. The world ended on a Thursday.
In just a day, the world succumbed to a pestilence which decimated the living. In its place rose this new species: gruesome, vicious, wandering monsters that had an insatiable hunger for the living. There’s no shelter, no government.
Cash, still in her twenties, has watched each of her friends die, just to get up and walk again. An office worker with little survival skills, she joins a grizzled Army veteran with PTSD, named Clutch. Together they each flee from the city and struggle through the nine circles of hell, without anything but Cash’s determination to live and Clutch’s military experience. While fighting to survive in the zombie inferno, they soon find that nowhere is safe from the undead. Or even the living, for that matter. This is the beginning after the end.
“Deadland’s Harvest” is the second novel in the “Deadland” series and was released in the year 2014. It has been a hundred days since the zombies went and claimed the world. Cash, with forty-two survivors, have found some safety in the well guarded and secluded Fox National Park. The leaves have been changing colors, a gorgeous yet brutal reminder that winter is about to come.
While the survivors get ready for the freezing months with no electricity and not enough food, they learn about the massive zombie herds some several hundred miles north that are headed their way. In order to save the park, Cash has to find a place for the survivors to hide from these migrating herds. If Cash and her small group of volunteers do not succeed by the time winter comes, the Fox survivors just might become Deadland’s Harvest.
“Deadland Rising” is the third novel in the “Deadland” series and was released in the year 2015. Winter has come.
It has been almost a year since the zombie hordes took the world over. While the plague eats away at its victims’ bodies, the Fox survivors go searching for a safe place to rebuild everything that they have lost. However a dangerous new threat has risen, hunting them from each direction.
In order to survive, Clutch, Cash, and their tiny band of refugees have to put their faith in a group of strangers and this new government with some radical plans. It’s going to take all of the Fox survivors’ bravery and strength to endure in this hostile and barren world. But even that may not be enough.
“Bounty Hunter” is the first novel in the “Bounty Hunter” series and was released in the year 2020. Being a bounty hunter out in the wastelands is not easy, and is soon going to get even harder. The world went down the crapper long ago. And then came the revolution. Things stink even worse now.
We need some gunfighter that is not afraid to stand up against impossible odds. Trouble is that every single one of the heroes died during the revolution, which means that we will just have to settle for “Havoc” Joe Ballast. He is no stranger to bad luck, however when the Sloan brothers corner him, they will soon discover the hard way that you should never, ever underestimate the Bounty Hunter.
