“A Rachel Prince Mystery” series is a set of novels by Dawn Brookes, a children’s picture book, nurse memoir, and contemporary fiction author. She was born in Nottingham, but spent much of her childhood and early adulthood in Leicester. She worked for the NHS for nearly four decades after training to become an RN in the 1970s. While she loves to consider her novels classic crime fiction, they are usually classified as cozy mysteries particularly in the United States. Since they are cozy mysteries, they do not have the swearing and graphic violence of pure crime fiction though that does not mean that they have shallow characters or that they are no as suspenseful. Brookes has also written three memoirs about her experience between 1977 to 1984 when she was a nurse in training hoping to become a Registered Nurse. Her memoirs are set in London East End, in a very small community. The book which chronicles what it was like training to become a registered nurse in the 1970s has been a consisted bestseller in both the United Kingdom and the US.
The “A Rachel Prince Mystery” series by Dawn Brookes is a combination of cruising, murder, and medicine with a little romance. Brookes combines her 39-year experience in nursing and the many holiday cruises for research to write novels full of verve that also satisfy her itch for crime fiction. “Prince” the name of her protagonist is in honor of her childhood dog that would often put his head on her knee while she was reading her novels as a child. While nursing is something that she always dreamed about, she never confined herself to just that. While she practiced as an RN, she took up amateur photography and it was not long before she was running a photo restoration business on the side. Dawn was also involved in church life and taught children and youth groups for several years. Once she published “A Cruise to Murder,” the first of the “Rachel Prince Mystery” series in 2018, she embraced life as an author. While she can write in a variety of genres, she loves to write cozy mysteries that are set on cruise liners given that she loves cruising around the world. Her series also has a touch of her medical expertise as a registered nurse. She currently writes fulltime and is a self-published author through Oakwood Publishing and Dawn Brookes Publishing which are her imprints.
