Rachel Wesson

Rachel Wesson is a historical fiction author whose love affair with books started from a young age. Born in Kilkenny but raised in Dublin, Ireland, Wesson spent her childhood annoying everyone with endless questions about the war. She also loved writing, and it is only then that her family could enjoy a break from all the questions. Wesson moved to London at some point but later decided that town life was no good for her growing family. She turned her writing into a career and moved to Surrey, where she currently resides with her husband and children. When Wesson is not reading or writing, she is either watching a movie or enjoying quality time with her family.

Orphan Train Escape

Orphan Train Escape comes first in the Hearts on the Rails series. The book tells a heartbreaking yet inspiring story of a woman who went through hell to protect those she loved. Before the civil war, New York was home to the haves living in beautiful mansions and the have-nots living in filthy, crowded buildings. Immigrants and women had no rights, and they depended on their employers’ goodwill. When Bridget Collins refuses to become her boss’s plaything, she finds herself in a bad situation. She has no job, no one to turn to, and with her two siblings under her care, Bridget has to find a new job fast.
With the help of her priest, Bridget comes up with a plan. She acts as an outplacement agent in the orphan trains and puts her six siblings in a shelter. It is not easy taking care of close to forty orphans, but Bridget is happy to have the ever-helpful Carl Watson by her side. However, Carl has traumatizing issues to deal with, and the pain often makes it hard for him to handle orphans. Through laughter and tears, Bridget realizes that the orphans had a lot to teach about love, loyalty, and life in general. What started as an escape from her woes turn into an unexpected calling for Bridget.

While Bridget’s job is hard enough, this determined woman will do anything for the orphans under her care. She knows that kid deserves a good home and will go to extra lengths to make this happen. However, no matter her good intentions, things did not always go as great. Set in America in the late 1850s, this book paints a clear picture of life for many during this era. There is a strong Christian faith element in the story and a main character with a deep faith in God. It is fun getting to know all the characters and seeing how they handle the challenges life throws at them. Some events will break your heart, but some of the characters’ resilience will inspire you.

Orphan Train Escape is an enjoyable read with memorable characters and an intriguing storyline. The children actions and the injustices against women and the poor will leave you in tears. However, the deeds of some of the characters in this story will give you hope. It is amazing that some are determined to serve those looked down upon by society. The author has outdone herself in detailing the history of the orphan trains and building believable characters that bring the story to life. There is a romance element in the book, which helps lighten the mood and show that love can blossom even in the most unexpected places.
Katie

Katie comes first in the Clover Springs Mail Order Brides series. The book introduces Katie O’Callaghan, a girl who had seen more than your average seventeen-year-old. After her mother’s death and a few unfortunate events, an uncle living in America offers to stay with Katie and her younger sister Ellen. Leaving their father and everything they had known in Ireland, the two girls head to America, a journey that takes a few months in the sea. The hold’s condition is bad, and many die of hunger and disease only to be buried at sea. Katie and Ellen are fortunate the survive the journey, but life in America is nothing like they expected.

These two sisters quickly realize that aside from their father and their uncle’s resemblance, the two men had nothing in common. Life in Boston turns out to be hard with a greedy uncle and an equally unpleasant auntie. After a year of suffering at the hands of her relatives, Katie is desperate for a way out, and this comes in the form of marriage. The young lady would rather be a mail-order bride than stay any longer in her uncle’s house. How does life turn out for Katie and her sister? Will her husband offer her the life that she wants?

Daniel Sullivan needs a wife ASAP. This is the condition given by the bank if he is to access a loan. After years of saving his cowboy’s earnings, Daniel is now ready to buy the Town’s store. The owner is just about to retire, and he was hoping that his dream would finally come true with a loan. With just a month to get a wife, Daniel starts searching even though he doesn’t know where to start. The girl he meets after the train robbery turns out to be engaged, but he cannot deny the instant connection between them. Fortunately, the universe seems to be working in his favor, and because of the rain delay, Daniel gets to take the girl of his dreams to his mother’s boarding house.

Katie is an engaging story that highlights the woes of immigrants a few decades ago. At the heart of the exciting read is a sweet romance that will transform the main characters’ lives. It is unfortunate that Katie and Ellen had to go through so much at such a young age. You will love this book if you enjoy mail-order brides, historical fiction, and western romance stories. A few twists will catch you off-guard, but you will be happy about what happens to your favorite characters in the end.

Rachel Wesson is a renowned Irish-born writer of historical fiction and general fiction stories hailing from Surrey, England. She is known to have penned several bestselling novel series in her career, including the Trails of the Heart series, Clover Springs Mail Order Brides series, Hearts on the Rails series, Clover Springs East series, and the Orphans of Hope House series. Wesson claims to have always been a hardcore fan of history. She got hooked on this genre when she was very small and since then she has continued to enjoy reading and writing historical stories. As an author, Wesson always tries to use her interest in history to create good, exciting stories.

Author Wesson was born in a small town called Kilkenny in Ireland. However, she considers herself to be from Dublin as she has spent a large part of her life there. When Wesson was small, her father used to take her out every Saturday along with her 2 sisters to give a break to their mother. Very often, they used to visit the library, where Wesson would spend hours reading her favorite stories and then cherish delicious ice-creams while returning home. As Wesson’s sisters were not interested in reading books that much, they used to quarrel with her for spending long hours selecting her books at the library, making them wait and do nothing.

While growing up, Wesson used to make everyone around her go nuts by asking frequent questions about the War and who they sided with during the 1916 rising, etc. It was only after the suggestion of her grandmother that Wesson started writing down her own stories with the hope that people will like to read them. Actually, her grandmother used this idea as a tactic to keep her busy so that others would be spared from her constant questioning about things. When Wesson was not writing or annoying her relatives, she was involved in reading. Her love for reading could be seen from her school report cards, which had greats comments on her reading abilities. But, Wesson was not doing well in other subjects and that worried her parents very much. Then Wesson grew up to indulge in different things as an adult, including having a love affair that ended abruptly.

When she could not think of doing anything worthwhile in her life, she decided to move to London, where she stayed for around two years. While there, Wesson found a job for herself in London City and also met her future husband. Her job required her to stay in the City while her 3 children stayed away from her in the countryside. A time came when Wesson thought the job was not everything and certainly she should not be keeping herself away from her family as she did. She so decided to quit the job, pack her bags and moved in with her husband and children.

While at home, Wesson began spending time writing stories. She never thought to make it a full-time career, but the love of her readers proved it otherwise. Their amazing responses to her novels helped her establish herself as a prominent author and cherish a rewarding and exciting career. As of today, author Wesson resides in Surrey along with her family, comprising of her loving husband, one daughter, and two sons. A usual day in her life is spent writing her manuscripts and either reading or watching films for research purposes. Wesson always tries to find time from her busy schedule to relax with her family and hang out with them. She even undertakes frequent travels to her home in Ireland to meet her peers and enjoy the beautiful weather there.

It features the primary characters in the form of Robbie Fenton, Erin Quinn, and Nora Doherty.

Initially, Erin Quinn is introduced as the beloved doctor of Clover Springs. She arrives with her team in New York to have an interaction with her past. When Nora’s mother insists that she return to Clover Springs with Erin as a mail-order bride, she is not thrilled at all. Erin’s team consists of a bodyguard named Robbie Fenton, who is tasked with ensuring the safety and security of Erin Quinn and her party while they are in New York. When Robbie sets his eyes on the beautiful Nora Doherty, he falls in love with her immediately. Later, as the blizzard hits New York City and covers it in 20 inches of snow, Robbie, Nora, and Erin set out to help. As they struggle to do so, they wonder if they will survive to see their own future.

The second installment of this lovely series is called ‘New York Storm’. It consists of the central characters Sadie O’Riordan, Jamie Headford, Tommy Carpenter, and Lizzie Carpenter. The story opens by mentioning that New York is hit by a blizzard that has covered it entirely with snow. This is the biggest storm ever witnessed and people are losing their lives on the street. Lizzie can’t wait to get married to Jamie, but he has decided that he is not going to ask her to marry him until he has sorted everything else in life.

The wait for the man who has taken away her heart makes Lizzie tired. She has some plans of her own in life and decides to move on. But, the storm interferes with their decisions and makes them realize that destiny has something else planned for them. Tommy Carpenter and Sadie O’Riordan are the other couple who get affected by the storm. Tommy loves Sadie very much and is determined not to let any harm come to her. But, when the rage of the storm continues, he wonders if there is enough strength in his love to see Sadie through the difficult days.

I love all the books I have read from MS. Wesson. It is hard to put down once you start to read them. I have had several nights that I read them until 2:00 in the morning. I love all the Orphan Series books, but I hope someday she will write another book on The House of Hope. It seems to need a follow on how everybody goes on with their lives. It is just a suggestion.

    A faithful fan and reader,
    Kathie Buck
