Cozy mystery is here again; this time it is great four legged mystery as it is the Raine Stockton series is eulogized. It comes under the name of Raine Stockton Dog Mysteries (Series by Donna Ball). It is worthy talking about the author before her work though by chance it has come before her. Donna Ball was born in 1952 in Georgia, United States and this is where she lives currently in the land acquired by her ancestors.
The writing journey of the renowned writer began in 1982 when she published her first book. Donna has gone on to publish more works under different pseudonyms including Donna Carlisle, Leigh Bristol and Shannon Harper. Other than writing, she also does dog obedience training and she loves hiking. Then what is in the Stockton Dog Mysteries that attracts attention from all over the world?
This is a series that, unlike all other dog mysteries ever written, has been able to use dogs as real characters. It has well developed characters whose interrelationship brings out the themes of cozy mystery in their best shape. The main character in the series is Rainey Stockton and she is well developed, courageous and investigative. We see her moving about to uncover the riddles in the novel assisted by CISCO another advanced character in the series.
Raine first appears in the first novel, the Smokey Mountain Tracks as a distraught Search and rescue worker. She has suffered great loss before and we see her giving up. Even when she comes back to active search and rescue, she is just too reluctant to do it. There is a kid who is kidnapped and is lost and is to be found as quickly as possible and so it is Raine and Cisco who move to perform the duty that Raine has always shown a lot of diligence in.
The younger retriever, Cisco, however fails to work up to his expectations despite his enthusiasm for the search. They go into the forest to find out whether they can help discover the young child’s whereabouts. In the process, the two suddenly discover the body of a dead kidnapper in the forest. This is when Stockton begins to realize that there is more about the case at hand than what meets the eye.
Being a native of the town of Hansonville, Raine seems to know more about the mountains of North Carolina. However, she has to make a choice or two. One; she has to decides to dig deeper into the cause of the current case, defeat her own demons and change her search directions. Secondly, she must now learn to trust Cisco and give him the opportunity to lead in the search.
This particular novel is suspense laden. Do we know the one who kills the kidnapper? How possibly is the six -year- old girl child and her mother going to be found and brought back from the wilderness? It gives a great twist to the mystery, it avoid much violence in the than you can expect it not to. It combines enforcement of the law, detective work and dog mystery nicely.it will surely keep you at the edge of your reading chair.
The second title –Rapid Fire features the character Raine. It begins by describing how busy the summer season is for Rainey’s dog training business in her Dog Training Boarding. It is in the same period that a development company wants to build a golf resort in part of the hills. This however does not auger well with Raine and many others around her.
It is however not until the arrival of the FBI led by one Deputy Sherriff Buck (ex-boyfriend) at Raine’s kennel during a dog training session when the mystery comes closer to her. They seem to have a big problem. It is about their childhood friend, Andy Fontana, who is back in their area after a 10 year disappearance. It is thought that he (Fontana) was behind the bombing of many souls ten years ago.
Additionally, Andy is on top of the FBI list of most wanted people. It is believed that he is back in the country and ready to visit his hometown. Further, it is predicted that he is back for a reason- to pick his reward for having bombed the chemical plant that led to death of many people. The reward is suspected to be one million dollars in funds or a huge cache of diamond that has been hidden in the desert. He is branded an ecoterrorist.
However, Raine does not believe that her former boyfriend could do such thing nor can he be reason for the current spree of crime in the region. An example is the killing after a vehicle in construction has its wheels slashed and one worker dies. The Sherriff and his men disagree with her and this is when she embarks onto a serious hunt for the truth.
She sets out to prove Andy’s innocence. The FBI believe that she will use, her search and rescue dog to find out the truth. Finally, it is Raine though through the help of Cisco that she finds out the real murder in the setting. I know you cannot wait to read about what the good emotions of the past can do to save a life.
Donna Ball has successfully given several print and broadcast interviews. She has been quoted in publications such as the Detroit Free Press and TV Guide, the Family Circle. It is no surprise that she has won many awards too for her previous writing for example the 2001 story teller of the year. She has also appeared in TV programs such as Lifestyle of the Rich and Famous and Entertainment Tonight. That is all courtesy of her writing work.
The way the dog characters have been built in the series gives you the spirit and thirst to read more novels in it. If you are a lover of dogs and dog series then you are sure you are not misplaced. It is worthy buying your own copies and get the gist of what everyone seems to praise all over.
