The Witness series written by Rebecca Forster is comprised of a total of 7 novels and 1 novella, that were released between the years 2004 and 2014. One of the initially published books in this series is entitled ‘Exert Witness’. It was released in 2013 as a Kindle edition, after its initial release in 2011. The start of this book shows that Josie Bates takes 16 year old Hannah Sheraton to live with her after defending her against the murder charges. She even files for becoming Hannah’s legal guardian. But, just a few days before the proceedings could get completed, Josie Bates goes missing. Hannah takes the help of Bates’ lover, Archer to search her. They find an important clue about the whereabouts of Josie that leads them on an intriguing trail starting from Hollywood Hills and going all the way up to the glitzy and the evangelical enclave of the Orange County. Hannah and Archer also search through the mountains in California and in Los Angeles. On the other hand, the services of child protection demand the remand of Hannah to the state custody. Therefore, it becomes even more important for Hannah to find Josie as soon as possible because she does not want to leave Josie. A study of Josie’s past reveals that she was once a hated and ruthless defense attorney. They also discover that there are a few people who wish that Josie Bates is never found.

In this book, Josie Bates is depicted as appearing in front of the senate selection committee and testifying about the blood feud among the Albanians, due to which Hannah and Billy Zuni have gone into hiding and Archer in trying to find them. Josie thinks that Senator Patriota is willing to help her, but she does not have faith in his promise. Soon, a man evades security and charges towards Josie. He pushes her to the ground, gives something in her hand secretly and whispers something into her ears. This makes Josie go an adventurous journey from Washington, D.C., to the beaches in Hawaii. She seems very much desperate to find Hannah. Her search makes her come across a flamboyant expat who is involved in the dealings of hula dancers. Josie Bates also learns about a Victorian compound located near the infamous Molokai island. In this compound, she finds a horrific truth that was buried for a long time. This truth seems to have a lasting impact on her life as well as change it forever. This book turned out to be an excellent read and was liked by numerous readers all across the globe. Author Forster was praised for coming up with such a unique story line. She was also appreciated for giving it an exciting and unexpected end. The excellent reviews helped the book to become extremely successful.
