Rebecca Roanhorse is an award-winning author of fantasy and science fiction novels from New Mexico, United States. She is popular for writing science fiction stories and short stories that feature Native American characters. Roanhorse’s range of work consists of a book series called The Sixth World, several standalone novels and short stories. She was born in 1971 in Conway, Arkansas in the African-American and Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo heritage. Roanhorse was brought up in Fort Worth, Texas. Currently, she is happily married and is the proud mother of a daughter. Most of the time, she remains glued to her computer and tries to develop her stories. During her spare times, Roanhorse likes to be in the company of her husband and daughter.
Prior to the start of her literary career, author Roanhorse earned her Bachelor of Arts degree from Yale University in Religious Studies. She followed it up with a Master of Arts degree from Union Theological Seminary in Theology. Additionally, Roanhorse has a degree in law from New Mexico University. Throughout her career, she has attended numerous writers’ workshops and conferences, including the Arts Foundation of the Voices of Our Nation workshop. In 2018, Roanhorse’s career received a great boost when she won three prestigious literary awards for one of her short stories called Welcome to Your Authentic Indian Experience. This short was published in the 2017 edition of the Apex Magazine and received the Hugo Award, the Nebula Award, and the John Campbell Award. The first two awards were given to Rebecca in the Best Short Story category, while the latter was given in the Best New Author category. Besides winning these awards, the short story had also received nominations for the Theodore Sturgeon Award, the World Fantasy Award, and the Locus Award, all in 2018.
In addition to the successful short story, Roanhorse has penned a few science fiction books. She made her debut in this genre with the novel called Trail of Lighting. This novel served as the first one in the Sixth World book series. Roanhorse has also written an autobiographical essay called Postcards from Apocalypse. This essay is an exploration of Indigenous Futurism. Roanhorse is expected to release her next novel, Storm of Locusts, in 2019. In the same year, an anthology of stories called Hungry Hearts is also expected to be released, in which Roanhorse has contributed several stories. Roanhorse has finished writing a couple more novels, Race to the Sun and Between Earth & Sky, which will be released in late 2019 and 2020 respectively. In the Trail of Lightning, the author has described an apocalyptic adventure story that takes place in Dinetah, a former Navajo reservation located in the Southern US, and features Navajo characters. This novel received a lot of criticism for twisting the spirituality and the teachings of the Navajo tribe. Roanhorse was also criticized for not respecting their sensibilities and harming their culture. A number of Navajo authors have condemned the novel by labeling it as an inaccurate appropriation of culture with a derisive and mocking tone. Author Roanhorse was interviewed about how she takes the criticism and what she has to say in her defense. She responded by saying that many Native characters are still living in the past and the novel was an attempt to make the readers of Native and non-Native America to realize that such people are still alive and are thriving in their cultures.
The Sixth World series written by author Rebecca Roanhorse is comprised of 3 books so far. Its debut book has been released under the title of ‘Trail of Lightning’ and the second book is going to get published soon. The third book is an untitled project and is still under development. In the series, author Roanhorse has shown how most parts of the world get drowned in a climatic apocalypse, but Dinetah manages to survive. The former Navajo reservation appears to get reborn and goes on to thrive with its daily struggles against the monsters and heroic attempts by heroes and gods. The main characters mentioned by author Roanhorse in the series include Maggie Hoskie, Kai Arviso, Caleb, White Locust, and several others.
The first book was published by the Saga Press in June 2018. It begins by depicting that a sudden climate apocalypse causes the water level to rise enormously, which results in the drowning of a major part of the world. But, in such struggling times, Dinetah seems to have taken rebirth. When the news of Dinetah’s rebirth spreads all over, heroes and gods of legend start walking the land there. The situation takes an unexpected turn when monsters also arrive on the Navajo reservation of Dinetah. Maggie Hoskie is introduced at this point in the story as a monster hunter. She is said to have supernatural gifts that help her to kill monsters in Dinetah. Sometime later, Maggie Hoskie learns about the disappearance of a girl in a mysterious situation in a small town. The people of that town see her as their last and best hope in finding the girl.
Maggie agrees to help them with all her capabilities. As soon as she begins to look for the girl, she comes to know that she has been taken by a monster. Maggie Hoskie feels terrified to know that the monster is much bigger and more terrifying than the monsters she has ever come across. To help her with this problem, Maggie reluctantly asks for Kai Arviso’s help. Kai is seen as a medicine man and a close friend of Maggie Hoskie. The two begin to make plans to defeat the big monster and save the girl. They meet ancient legends to unravel clues from them, fight against dark witchcraft, and take favors from tricksters. A time comes when Maggie and Kai succeed in discovering the truth about the disappearances, but before they can rescue the girl, Maggie needs to confront some events from her past. It is not going to be easy for her and may challenge her own survival. But, Maggie is determined to do anything for the innocent girl and the people of the town. The book managed to attract a large crowd of readers all over the globe. They liked each and every aspect of the story and praised it with great comments.
