Main character Sydney Whitmore works as a forensic psychologist and resides in San Francisco. She decides to move home after a tragedy hits and she is left trying to find a way that she can make sense of things. Sydney is going back to Shipwreck Island as well as her family’s resort, which they own and operate.

Sydney has also found out that an old friend of hers was viciously assaulted, leaving him in a coma. After that, she gets back in touch and renews her relationship with a man named Ezra Reinhold. He is a billionaire that is sort of reclusive and likes to poke around in old cold cases. He also has the financial ability and means to be able to hire the right people that can potentially track down answers that no one else so far has been able to find.

Meanwhile, a group of ten students in high school go camping, but only eight of them come back. The statements of the students that have made their way back have been given to Sheriff Sam Stone. But they’re all so different in telling that it’s confusing the situation and making them all useless. Syd agrees to give Sam a hand since she has been able to get the truth out of people and starts looking through the various witness statements available.

She’s determined to try and find the truth behind what are at least a few lies. In the meantime, Syd’s younger sister Emily has begun her own lifestyle blog, Rory, her youngest sister, is busy taking care of kittens by fostering them, and Sydney gets back in touch with Kelly Green.
