Trick or Treat
Trick or Treat is the sixth in the Point Horror Series. Martha’s dad had just gotten a new wife, Sally, and found an ideal house for them to relocate to. Upon arrival at the woods home, Martha already hates the place.
Martha barely knows her new family, and now they’ve moved to a new house in a new town. Now weird things have started happening.
It’s so dark and creepy with some shadows in its corners. Additionally, her bedroom feels extremely and abnormally cold, and she has a feeling that someone is watching her. They are also living with Conor, Sally’s son and Martha’s stepbrother, who is one year older than Martha.
She is already dating Blake, like Elizabeth, sleeping in the same bedroom. Martha makes friends in school who inform her that her new house, ‘the Bedford house,’ is said to be haunted. Among her friends are Blake and Wynn, and the girl who was murdered was Blake’s girlfriend and Wynn’s best friend.
Rumors have it that a young girl was killed a year ago during Halloween in the same bedroom Martha is sleeping. This leaves her wondering whether she might be the next victim.
What’s more frightening is that Martha has some resemblance to the murdered girl. After a while, she begins to receive weird calls threatening her. One night, a scarecrow is found outside her bedroom window, hanging with a knife on the head.
After a few days, Martha’s father gets a call where he’s informed that he has to go on a business trip to Hawaii. He goes with his wife and Sally, leaving Conor and Martha in the haunted house.
Later Martha finds out that the killer from the previous crime is mission. She also finds out that she is more like Elizabeth, the victim. Martha is ready to go back to Chicago, but a voice keeps calling her, saying ‘Trick or Treat’ telling her she is about to die.
Martha wants to find out who has been pranking her just like they did with Elizabeth. She’s determined to find out who is responsible before the clock stops ticking.
The story becomes a murder mystery as Martha and her new school friends try to figure out what’s going on and if the killer is after her. The killer was never found, and now he seems to be back.
Might the killer be planning to strike the house again during Halloween, which is just around the corner? Is he planning to kill Martha this time round? How is he connected to the old Bedford house?
Martha fits as the protagonist of the horror story as a little whiny, uncomfortable with her skin, and afraid to talk about how she feels.
Cusick knows how to slowly and steadily bring her readers to the story’s climax, leading them into the winding path of horror. For fans who are interested in creeped out and looking over your shoulders feeling, Trick or Treat will make a perfect read for you.
Walk of the Spirits
Walk of the Spirits is the debut in the Walk series. After Miranda Barnes sees the sleepy town of St. Yvette, Louisiana, its moss-draped trees and cemeteries, she has just lived a nightmare after the hurricane destroyed her home in Florida. She has to relocate to live with her grandpa and aunt Teeta.
Miranda has to move from her hometown after a hurricane destroys her home. At first, she’s lonely and pissed at everything happening. It’s her grandfather’s creepy home, and she has realized that the life she knew is already over.
The story starts with the mystery of Miranda’s unconventional grandfather, who’s known as the crazy one in town. Athough she lives in the same house as him, Miranda’s mother has restricted her from meeting him for a reason.
Due to her well-known grandpa, she is well placed into a group of friends who already know much about her. It appears something sentimental about her, sad, pressing and lonely. At school’s group project, she has been thrown to she has no power to escape it. She can hear whispers while in a place alone and can see shadows where there are no people to form them.
As a requirement of the project, the group has to research the history behind their town on ghost activities. During the research, she finds out she can communicate with the spirits of the dead looking for help.
The visions and the ghostly figures make Miranda want to know more about her grandfather because maybe the craziness runs in the family or something mysterious is going on. After her grandfather’s untimely death, Miranda starts confiding in her friends so that they can incorporate her knowledge into the project research work.
Her gift came in handy for their current school work to discover the history of St Yvette town. However, she has discovered more than she needed, and everything kicks off from her visions.
Additionally, she can hear voices from a distance pleading until she wakes up. The rest of the group project members, especially the charming Etienne, feel something is troubling Miranda. She has started understanding that, just like her grandfather, she has a unique gift of talking with the spirits who roam the town of St. Yvette.
Everywhere she goes, Miranda feels surrounded by the whispers asking for help. To end the whispers, she has to find a way to put them at peace. The historical romance and mystery are well told to make the story more fascinating.
It’s amazing how Miranda embraced her destiny, and her friends support and have faith in her. The friendship aspect in the group added more flesh to the story. The friends had great chemistry and related well despite being different.
