Vatican Knights

This is the first book in Vatican Knights book series by Rick Jones. It’s an exciting thriller that promises to hook you in almost immediately and never lets you off the hook until the very last page. Rick Jones presents the reader to an all too real situation that would result into a winner-take-all religious war. In this story, he introduces us to the elite special forces of the world’s smallest country- the Vatican.

The Pope, while on an official trip to the United States, is abducted from the mansion of Maryland’s Governor in Annapolis. The Pope’s entire protection team is murdered, and two bodies from a terrorist group dubbed The Soldiers of Islam are found. The world is in a crisis, and the dark seeds of a brutal religious war are already sowed on a wet ground. Sheri Cohen, a Jew and a grandchild of one of Auschwitz survivors is thought to be the best bet for negotiation in the service of FBI and placed in charge by the president. Failure to this mission is not an option, but with a few pieces of clues to work with, agent Cohen has very tiny space to maneuver. She ponders why the elite team did so much to hide their identity, yet they left two bodies behind when they had so much time to dispose of them. Cohen races against time as the terrorist group issues more demands, and the hostages would soon start to be executed.

Kimball Hayden is the head of the team unit dubbed the Vatican Knights. The existence of this unit is a classified, and the mission assigned to him is straight forward: bring the Pope back alive at all costs. Again for Kimball failure isn’t an option and he must insert himself into the investigations and get Cohen to trust him enough if he’s to succeed in his rescue mission. But not everything is as it seems. There are people in power who want the rescue mission to fail, and they will stop at nothing to see their mission accomplished.

The main antagonist in the story is the man known as the Team Leader. We get a limited back story on him but get to learn that he was only nine when his family was murdered by a bomb in Ramallah, and so the reader can glean some motivations for his actions. He is brutal and ruthless, and you will love to hate him at every single turn of the page. His addictions rule his life and actions, and there’s no much change as the narrative progresses. Like the story, the Team Leader is more than he seems, and his identity is also surprising.

The protagonists in the story are Kimball Hayden, and Shari Cohen and the story is already underway before we are introduced to the pair. For Kimball, he is never mentioned until chapter eleven and he the type of imperfect hero. Having worked as the best assassin a secret US organization every hired, Kimball vanished on his last mission and was assumed to be dead. But the truth is that he had a conflicting conscience and moved to the Vatican to atone for all his sin. He thought that his assassin skills would be good serving the Pope in an attempt to zero in the balance sheet for his soul.

On the other hand, Shari Cohen isn’t introduced to the story until chapter 13. She is a flawed person, undergoing marital problems that she’s willing to solve. But like her partner Kimball, she is committed to her job, honest and these qualities make it easy for the reader to like them both. Their feelings for each other threaten to compromise their assignments. Overall, the pacing of the story is perfect, begins with a major event, and then slows down as either side evaluate their options.

The Tombs of Eden

The Tombs of Eden is the first book in Eden Saga, a series of adventure thriller books by Rick Jones. How much have you thought about the garden of Eden? Have you ever wondered about its true location or if it even exists? Archeologists have discovered a temple that they believe to be 14,000 years old. They firmly believe it is the precise location of Eden, and a team is sent to investigate, but only one person comes out alive.

Alyssa Moore is going to send another team into the temple. She has to because her father was the leader of the first team and died while trying to prove his theory and is determined to fulfill her father’s wish to finding the garden of Eden.

When the news reaches the rest of the world, the draws Vatican’s interest, the pope has some dirty secrets to hide, and one of them has to do with the temple. He’s faced with a tough decision to make. The news about the temple also reaches the Obsidian Hall, the man who’s funding the dig. He is a wealthy man with interest in archeological items of value. He lives in a yacht where he keeps his collection. The story moves along quickly, capturing the reader’s attention from the first page. The mystery puzzle is presented in such a way that the reader is given a chance to solve it before the intrepid explorers.
