Much acclaimed comic-book author most famous for his series ‘The Walking Dead’ and ‘Battle Pope’, American writer Robert Kirkman has been creating his work for a number of years now. With an appeal expanding across a number of different platforms, his popularity continues to grow. Revolutionizing the comic-book format and how it is perceived, this success shows no signs of slowing anytime soon.
Early and Personal Life
Born on the 30th of November, 1978, Robert Kirkman was brought up in Richmond, Kentucky, where he spent the early years of his life. With a love of comics from an early age, he sought to hone and progress his craft throughout the years. Using his experiences from the world around him growing up, as well as other inspiration from the genre, he managed to build upon his body of work. Creating comics from an early age, he started out with a clear knowledge of the genre, whilst injecting his own irreverent take on it. With his own sense-of-humor he managed to create a unique and idiosyncratic approach to the format, giving a fresh new spin. This was something he learned growing up as he took from his experiences and the world around him as his source of inspiration.
Now living in Kentucky still with his wife and two children, he continues to write comics to this day, whilst also keeping up-to-date on his other various media projects. Moving the medium forwards as a whole though, he’s managed to produce work that has gotten the form seriously recognized. With more to come on the horizon, there’s plenty more material set in the future for the author Robert Kirkman.
Writing Career
Creating his first comic-book in 2000, he started by writing the story ‘Battle Pope’ with the artist Tony Moore which they then published. This was a super-hero parody understanding many of the comic conventions whilst simultaneously breaking them at the same time. Making his impact onto the comic-book scene, he heralded a new and exciting talent that was to make waves within the industry.
Working for the company ‘Image’ in 2003, he went onto publish the comic-book ‘Invincible’ which was to be a part of their new super-hero production line. This then got optioned for a major Hollywood production, as Kirkman was himself asked to write the screenplay for it. There was also a motion comic of made available for download that provided another avenue for Kirkman as a writer. All this then led up to his infamous ‘Walking Dead’ series which he started in 2003 with his long-time collaborative partner artist Tony Moore once again. Creating the long-running series between 2003 to the present day, it used the zombie genre to successfully convey a set of deeper and more intricate themes. This then led up to the hugely popular AMC television series that is still currently running to much acclaim of its own.
Recently he’s just finished up his first feature length film with some of the characters from the Walking Dead series, called AIR. Using his own production company, this is set to take him in an entirely new direction as he writes and produces his own films. With his career growing from strength-to-strength, he’s got plenty more to come, whether it be comic-book, television or film as popularity continues to grow.
Battle Pope
This was the comic-book that started it all as it was the precursor to Robert Kirkman’s entire literary career. Published in 2000, it worked as a one-off graphic novel that was to gain Kirkman the attention that would help carry his profile through the next few years. Also made into a cartoon in 2008, it enjoyed a limited eight episode run as it aired on Spike during 2008 receiving considerable acclaim.
Casting the pope in a somewhat different light, it charts his life as a crime fighter of biblical proportions as he undergoes training to become the eponymous ‘Battle Pope’. Recently though he’s fallen by the wayside as he’s become a hardened drinker living a life of debauchery, thus damning him in the eyes of the lord. Then the Rapture takes place and the world finds itself overrun by demons, leaving him as the last hope of saving it, along with the help of Jesus H. Christ. Controversial as it is irreverent, it provides a fun and inventive take on the Pope and his calling, showing him in a whole new light. Providing fast and colorful visuals, it runs along at a vibrant, although somewhat x-rated, pace that races throughout. Will the Battle Pope be able to save the world redeeming himself in the eyes of the lord becoming the savior of the earth?
The Walking Dead
Set out into volumes, this is an ongoing series that begun in October, 2003, and still continues to this vary day. Charting the exploits of a group of survivors in a zombie apocalypse, it shows the way in which they come together and interact with one another in the face of imminent danger. Told across a variety of different mediums, it’s been adapted into a long-running TV series, as well as a popular video-game.
Waking up to find himself seemingly alone in a hospital lying on a gurney in his robes, Officer Rick Grimes wonders where he is and how he got there. Having been in an accident at work he’s been taken into intensive care during which time, unbeknownst to him, the living-dead are now at large. Quickly needing to find his bearings, he has to keep his wits about him if he wants to make it out the hospital alive. Finding that there’s danger round every corner though this is harder than expected as he attempts to get back to his family in one piece. Will he be able to make it out alive, or will he fall victim to those they simply call ‘walkers’? What will he do once he gets there if they think he’s dead feeling it’s time to move on and survive within the horror of it all? Can humanity ever regain itself and become strong once more as it faces up to the hideousness of the walking dead?
