Robert Pinsky is an American essayist, poet, literary critic, and translator.
He was born on October 20, 1940 in Long Beach, New Jersey. He grew up in Long Branch, which was a historic seaside resort. He was the Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress, a position that he served in from 1997 to 2000.
Robert has authored over a dozen books and the majority of these are collections of his poetry. His published work also extends to include translations such as The Inferno of Dante Alighieri and The Separate Notebooks by Czeslaw Milosz, both of which have been critically acclaimed. He is also known for his book of poetry At the Foundling Hospital.
He is a teacher at Boston University and also works at Slate as their poetry editor. He has been honored by being given the Korean Manhae Award, the Italian Premio Capri, and the Harold Washington Award of the City of Chicago. Robert has also been given honorary degrees from institutions such as Stanford and the University of Michigan.
His first two terms as the U.S. Poet Laureate were so well received nationally that he was given a third term, something that was unprecedented. He founded the Favorite Poem Project, which saw thousands of American readers of all types of backgrounds read their favorite poems. They are available in video format at favoritepoem.org if readers wish to check them out.
Robert is a William Fairfield Warren Distinguished Professor at Boston University. He has appeared on television shows such as The Simpsons and The Colbert Report, and so far is the sole member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters to have done so.
The Sounds of Poetry: A Brief Guide is a 2014 collection from Robert Pinsky. If you love poetry then you of course are going to want to check out this collection of work from a former U.S. Poet Laureate. It’s always good to introduce new poetry and types of writing and creative expression into your library, so why not bring this collection of work in and expand your own collection?
James Logenbach of The Nation said that this was a ‘keenly idiosyncratic account of the place of poetry in our time’ and said that it was ‘not only interesting but suspenseful to read’. He is a former Poet Laureate and as such is a great spokesman in America for poetry.
Inside of this fascinating book, he is able to explain how poets are able to harness the technology of poetry and its sounds to come up with works of art that can be performed when we read them out loud. Brief chapters that have plenty of information are dedicated to accent, duration, syntax and line, and blank and free verse, drawing from the examples of the work of many different poets.
This is an introductory volume that should be a part of your own collection. Check it out to expand your own horizons and learn a little more from a master of poetry!
Robert Pinsky: The First Two Books of Poems is a collection from Princeton Series of Contemporary Poets by Robert Pinsky. For the first time get the two works of Robert Pinsky in one place and get two works for the price of one.
Whether you’re reading on your own or sharing with your book club or local reading group, this is a great way to read some more poetry and get another classic form of writing and art into your life. Brian Gunn of the San Francisco Chronicle said that this is a ‘profoundly uplifting book’ and declares that the poet ‘returns to language a sense of possibility and delight’.
Meanwhile, Graham Christian of The Boston Phoenix said one of the ‘marvelous things about this book’ is the poet’s ‘deep recognition that a poem is successful […] because of the effect it creates in the reader, and in many readers over time’.
These are the first two books that have been released from the former poet laureate and Pulitzer Prize finalist. They’ve been put into one volume and the author has also added his own preface. His two collections Sadness and Happiness and An Explanation of America have been put together and presented for the reader to enjoy. They go together like peanut butter and jelly or cookies and milk!
The release of these collections were the arrival of an all new voice in the landscape of American poetry. Now they are here for an all new audience of readers to enjoy as they take in the work of this award-winning poet.
