About Rosemary Sutcliff

Rosemary Sutcliff, CBE, was born on December 14, 1920, in West Clandon, Surrey. From a young age, she was nourished by stories and a passion for reading. Growing up, her father was a naval officer and she lived in Malta and other naval bases. Sadly, she developed Still’s Disease, which kept her in a wheelchair for the rest of her life. Her mother was a dedicated storyteller and Sutcliff became deeply fascinated by Celtic and Saxon legends.

Due to her illness, Sutcliff struggled to attend school until the age of nine when she finally learned how to read. She then attended Bideford Art School for three years, graduating from the General Art Course. Later, her career as a miniaturist painter began. Sutcliff was a celebrated British novelist and children’s author, highly regarded for her depth and quality of writing. Her influence continues on to this day even though she passed away in 1992, leaving behind a powerful legacy.

Writing Career

Rosemary Sutcliff was a prolific and award-winning writer who published over 40 books for children. Her first book, The Queen Elizabeth Story, was published in 1950 and her career would span four decades. Her most notable series was Eagle of the Ninth, a five-book series, and Legends of King Arthur, a four-book series. Among her many novels were Chronicles of Robin Hood, The Armourer’s House, Brother Dustyfeet, Warrior Scarlet, and The Chief’s Daughter.

Sutcliff also wrote several picture books, such as The Roundabout Horse and A Little Dog Like You, as well as non-fiction works, such as Heroes and History and Is Anyone There? In 1960, Sutcliff won the prestigious Carnegie Medal for her book The Lantern Bearers. In 1975, she was awarded the Order of the British Empire for her services to children’s literature. Throughout her career, Sutcliff explored many different cultures and stories, creating a beloved and lasting body of work.
