Best selling author Russell Blake resides in Mexico with his dogs. With 25 books to his name in only approximately two years, he is a featured author in the prestigious UK newspaper The Times as well as a published Page One Wall Street Journal author. Well respected in the literary world, Russell Blake has a worldwide following and has found international acclaim with many of his works.

Whilst most of his works are in the fiction genre, Russell has also written a number of non-fiction books, which have also sold extremely well.

Russell is a supportive member of the “Read a Book, Make a Difference” (RAMBAD) society of writers which is dedicated to supporting and helping other writers.

A frequent guest publisher, Russell has written for the Huffington Post and often writes guest blogs on many different websites.

Unusually for many authors, Russell Blake does not use a publisher, as he prefers to self publish and sell his novels as eBooks. He has sold a phenomenal 450,000 books over the last two and a half years, all by the way of self-publishing.

Self-publisher

Russell Blake is a keen self-publisher. He finds the freedom of self-publishing works for him, allowing him to release a book when he wants to rather than waiting months and months for a publisher to release it. Using a professional editor along with a support team, which includes a formatter, pro cover designer and a proofreader, he makes more money per unit sold than using the professional publishing route. The downside to selling his books this way is that his books are not sold in shop stores. However, the plus side of self-publishing far outweighs this one disadvantage.

On average, Russell Blake publishes around six books a year. If he were to use the traditional method of publishing, this would be reduced to one.

Speed writer

Well known for the speed of his writing, Russell Blake can produce between 6000-8000 words of quality text per day. Even for a professional author, this is a phenomenal amount of writing. This speed allows him to write one book every six weeks or so.

Many other writers wonder how he can consistently produce so many words over a long period of time at the same high standard. The answer is that he often spends 12 to 15 hours a day writing, writing, writing.

Samples of his work

Russell has many publications that are internationally renowned and are best sellers. Some examples of these are:-

Advertising

Russell does not often advertise his work. He has found that he has built up his reputation over the last couple of years to the point where his name alone sells his books. He started out on Twitter writing funny and irreverent comments and his following has built up rapidly over the years.

On the odd time that he does advertise, Russell is most likely to use “Bookbub” and “ENT”.

Tequila

Tequila is Russell’s favorite drink.

If Russell wasn’t an author

If Russell were ever to give up writing, he would become a full-custom home designer.

Exercise at work

To stop him from becoming too sedentary, Russell has a treadmill desk. This allows him to exercise whilst still writing.

Writing

When writing a new novel, Russell has a set format that he always follows. Firstly, he writes one or two paragraphs which will summarize the story. This is followed by one sentence summaries of the first 15 chapter headings. Then he starts to write.

On average, he has to write three drafts before he considers his work good enough to send off to his editor.

Russell is planning to diversify into writing romance novels. In summer 2014, he will start working with Melissa Foster on this sub genre.

What does it take to be a great writer?
