Ryk Brown is an American author of science fiction novels that has been in the business of writing and self-publishing since 2011.

+Biography

Ryk Brown was born in 1960. Like many authors, Ryk always dreamed about writing as a child. He was especially interested in space and the science fiction genre as a whole, and it was his wish to eventually create his own on-going science fiction series. Ryk Brown was drawn to science fiction because it allowed him to create stories in which he could shape humanity’s future as he wished.

He also relished the idea of creating characters that could explore space and the universe. However, the author’s journey to publishing success was a little crooked. Ryk knew he liked writing but he wasn’t certain about what he wanted to do professionally.

It was for this reason that the author experimented with a number of jobs, this including playing guitar, cooking and working as a stage lighting technician. Even as he aimlessly wandered through life, the author never stopped writing.

It helped that Brown had so much support. The author’s friends and family have always believed in his abilities as a writer. That support might have a lot to do with the fact that Ryk Brown’s kin and kith have watched his writing abilities evolve over time.

By the time he was in Junior High, Ryk was already writing screenplays for his school’s productions. Ryk knows now that most of those screenplays were pretty terrible; he knows this because his mother kept many of them and he has since had the cringe-worthy opportunity of reading them.

Ryk’s journey to publishing success began when he became a paramedic. Work was really slow at the author’s ambulance station. Ryk had so much time on his hands that he even wrote a science fiction novel. The author had no publishing dreams or intentions at the time. He just wanted to see if he could do it. Not only did he realize that he could indeed do it, but all Ryk’s friends and family heaped praise upon his science fiction novel, referring to it as the sort of addictive read they struggled to put down.

This praise would have pushed any other author to pursue a writing career. However, Ryk Brown did not take any of these comments to heart. He thought his friends and family where just being polite.

And Ryk was actually enjoying his life as a paramedic, so he buried the novel along with any thoughts of writing and publishing.

Life as a paramedic eventually ended and Ryk Brown began a new chapter by opening a computer repair shop. The author’s life took a sharp turn in 2011. The economy took such a hard turn that Ryk was forced to move his business into his home in order to save on costs. Even then, he had to borrow money from his elderly mother just to keep a roof over his family’s head.

Ryk realized that he would have to go out and get a real job if he wanted to survive; however, the job market was at its worst in 2011 and Ryk wasn’t very optimistic about his chances.

Ryk did not realize it immediately, but his life began to change the moment his mother gave him her old Kindle. Not wanting to let the device go to waste, Ryk began browsing a few digital libraries and this opened his eyes to the world of self-publishing.

The author was shocked by the number of self-published authors he came across. He was even more astounded by the fact that so many of them were making good money from writing and publishing their own books.

This realization was especially surprising because Ryk Brown thought so many of the indie authors he encountered were terrible writers. But if they could succeed, Ryk realized that there might be hope for him in the self-publishing industry.

Having dreamt of the prospect of creating his own science fiction universe as a child, Ryk returned to the story he had written as a paramedic and attempted to edit it into something substantial.

However, it soon became clear to Ryk Brown that he would have to start from scratch and create something completely new if he wanted to compete favorably on the saturated indie market.

After a couple of months of brainstorming, writing and editing, Ryk Brown finally produced and published the first book in the ‘Frontiers Saga’ series on Amazon.

The first few months were hard. However, readers eventually started to trickle in. By the time Ryk published his third book in the Frontiers universe, he was selling thousands of copies of his books.

Eventually, his first big royalty check from Amazon came and Ryk realized that he could now afford to hire proofreaders, editors and cover artists. This set him on the path to becoming a renowned indie author with a growing following all over the world.

+Aurora CV-01

With a world struggling to escape a devastating plague, a brutal enemy on the verge of invasion and a young man looking to creep out from under his father’s shadow, the first episode in the Frontiers Saga brings a number of players to the table to play a game that will change everything.

The crew of the UES Aurora are about to take their first steps to achieving an amazing destiny.

This book has been compared to the likes of Star Trek and Stargate. Some comparisons have been positive, with readers praising Ryk Brown for writing science fiction that harkens back to popular space dramas.

For a few readers, though, the similarities between this book and other science fiction tales detract from Ryk Brown’s work.

The story revolves around a spaceship with the ability to essentially teleport all over the universe. When the ship accidentally jumps into the midst of a space battle and its experienced crew are killed, a team of young amateurs take over and undertake all sorts of adventures.

+Freedom’s Dawn

With a world coming to the edge of civil war, the crew of the Aurora and the Corinairans must work in tandem with the Karuzari for the good of all.

This book finds the Ship Aurora in orbit around a planet known as Corinair. Most of the action takes place on the planet. The ship itself doesn’t really move much. In fact, very little happens in space in his novel.

I love your books so much. May need to start over and read them all again. Wish General Tullis had been kept as a character. He was one of my favorite. Jeffrey Kafer is the bees knees. He helps make the series. Please please don’t stop the series. I look so forward to each time a book is released on audible.

The one thing I completely forgot to include in my last reply was to say how superb the narration by Jeffrey Kafer was throughout the Fronters series. His vocalisation brought the books to life and were very much at the heart of the stories!
It is great that he is narrating Rogue Castes also. Thanks Mr Kafer !

I have just finished Book 15 in the Frontiers series having read 1-14 on the way there.
This is a remarkable series, each book is, like the first one Ryk Brown wrote for his family, hard to put down.
Interesting and vibrant characters, non-stop action and a vision of the vast expanse of deep space which brings it to life for the reader.
The books took me into another world and allowed me to escape my own for a while.
Rogue Castes is next, I look forward to it.
    Thank you Ryk Brown!
