The main character in this story is Nathan Waymaker. He’s the type of guy that is a little rough around the edges. He’s held many jobs in his day, working at the funeral home that was run by his cousin or else acting as the resident bouncer at the bar he likes to frequent and kicking the riff-raff out of there. He’s the type of guy that doesn’t have to be told how to handle a body.
He used to work as a Sheriff’s deputy and before that served as a Marine. Nathan is known by the others in his town as the guy that you go to that might be able to help when you just don’t have any other options left to you. Once you’ve used up all available roads, this Southern gentleman is the man that you seek out. At least, that’s come to be his reputation.
Nathan certainly is able to handle whatever gets thrown his way and he’s the person that the locals turn to when something terrible happens. The local minister is discovered dead and while he may have harbored grand ambitions, he is no longer going to be able to do anything about pursuing them anymore. The parishioners of his church go to Nathan because they believe that the police that are handling the investigation are taking their time about looking into it and maybe even dragging their feet. They want Nathan to try and figure out what happened and perhaps find a suspect since the local authorities seem to be of no assistance.
Nathan agrees to take the case on, thinking that it will be easy enough to find out who killed the minister. But what seems like a way to just solve a case and get some cash quickly becomes more complicated than he could have ever anticipated. The mayhem that ensures is full of threats and gangsters and crooked cops along with crime lords and more come out of the woodwork to challenge him and make things more difficult.
Nathan must use everything that he has learned and call upon his specialized past in order to try and figure out what’s going on. Can he discover who really killed the minister? Or are there some secrets that he will never be able to discover? Can he survive when secrets from his own life risk coming up? Read this thriller to find out!
Blacktop Wasteland is the third novel of fiction from S.A. Cosby. It’s been the LA Times Book Prize Winner of 2020 and was named one of the best crime and thriller novels of 2020 by Guardian. Check out the book that Lee Child is praising as “sensationally good” and that Stephen King is saying that he absolutely ‘loved’.
Michael Connelly also had good things to say about the novel, saying that it may very well be the book of the year. Dennis Lehane also thought highly of the novel, calling the work a “pitch-perfect jolt” when it comes to delivering American noir. Mark Billingham agreed, as he said that the novel was ‘stunning’ and that he could not recall the last time that he had read a crime novel this powerful.
This is a story featuring the main character of Bug Montage. He is a lot of things these days. He’s a family man, full of love. He’s a mechanic, doing an honest day’s work. He may have been a criminal in the past, but that’s long over now. Now he’s the sharpest wheel man that there exists, at least when it comes to the east side of the Mississippi.
He’s been doing whatever he can to try and build up a respectable existence for himself, doing things the right way. There’s always the temptation of the criminal life, but Bug’s been doing what he can to leave that behind. He only runs into trouble when the life that he has been building for himself all comes tumbling down.
It’s then that an associate comes to his door with a proposition. He has the offer of a job that would just be a one time thing and comes with a payout that has the potential to be really big. Bug is tempted by the offer as well as the chance to have a huge pay day and feel the thrill of the life that he used to live once more.
After all, Bug’s always been tempted when it comes to getting into the driver’s seat. He’s also got his outlaw father haunting him and just like that, with the flick of a switch, he’s back into the underground world where betrayal can be as common as the bullets that fly there. Thrilling and intoxicating, this drama follows a man as he tries to do the right thing but ultimately turns to hear the call of the world that he left behind.
Will it take him down this time once and for all? If you want to find out how the story ends, check out this high-octane novel for yourself!

Started from newest to oldest. Listened to Razorblades Tears (2021) and liked the suspense and thrill of the story that I needed to see what other books this author had. Just finished listening to Blacktop Wasteland (2020) which was hard to put down. On to My Darkest Prayer (2019] & Brotherhood of the Blade (2014), sure hope I don’t have to wait too long from my local library to get the audiobooks.
