Death by Chocolate
Death by Chocolate introduces the Death by Chocolate Series. Lindsay Powell is a chocolatier who took in Paula after she turned in at her door with nothing except her baby, Zach. Paula was rented out a house by Powell and even given a job in her ever-growing chocolate bakery. Deep in her, Lindsay has always suspected that a lot was amiss with her neighbor and her thoughts are about to be confirmed by the events that follow.
Paula is about to free as someone seems to be interfering with her life which she has always kept quiet. She lives a suspicious life where she always insists on having an emergency exit for any room and even dyeing her hair brown, but the past seems to be coming back and threatening her to the point of wanting to free. Determined to help Paula, Lindsay seeks the assistance of her friend who is an OCD computer nerd. Fred is an expert in functions such as searching for guns, hidden, and interiors of maximum-security prisons.
Lindsay life turns into chaotic all of a sudden with her ex-husband constantly nagging her although she has insisted that the relationship cannot work as a result of his constant cheating. She is also trying to avoid the detective Trent and still have him sort out the mess that has befallen her life and bakery. While she only has her biggest secret as the recipe she uses, all those that surround her seem to have their lives full of dark secrets. The problems in her life are added when a dead man is recovered and the chocolate in her bakery is poised.
This is an excellent read for all mystery lovers with an excellent pace and simple language. The engaging plot, captivating characters, and vivid descriptions make the story incredible.
Murder, Lies, and Chocolate
Murder, Lies, and Chocolate is the second instalment in the Death by Chocolate Series. A considerable mystery surrounds the life of Lindsay. Rodney Branford comes to her with an offer to buy her house at double its price but the mo0ment he leaves, he drops down on the front sidewalk. Her stubborn and cheating ex-husband presents an offer to exchange his big house with Lindsay’s small one.
Lindsay’s house becomes the attention of everyone around some giving figures that are overly huge. They seem to know a lot that she doesn’t know with extremes of murders being seen as a result of this discovery. Lindsay is about to have the divorce papers signed by rick but all of a sudden, he changes things and requests that she first sells over the jointly owned house. Fred, the detective, is about to get into a relationship with Lindsay but the refusal of rick to sign the divorce papers keeps everything hanging.
The moment there is a break in into Lindsay’s house creates a constant contact for her and the detective. However, one part still questions the detective which instills fear and some level of distrust in him such as the way he was able to get accurate information on her ex-husband. The story has one side running parallel to the other in that while some positive emotions are running between Fred and Lindsay, another dark thing involving the sudden interest in her house by purchasers gives her nightmares.
Sally Berneathy has expertly drawn a love story alongside a deep and a bit scary mystery. The arrangement of events in the story with additions of humor and wired characters and places make it enjoyable. She is able to keep the reader concentrating all along to the end making the Murder, Lies, and Chocolate one of the best reads around.
The Great Chocolate Scam
The third book in her Death by Chocolate Series is The Great Chocolate Scam. After a traumatizing period with her ex-husband, things cool of and Rick finally agrees to sign the divorce papers. Before this could take place, Rick dies in a car bomb bringing another tragedy and mystery into her life.
Rick had lived a life full of lies and cheating which Lindsay had become tired of and wanted a divorce. Lindsay knew none of Rick’s family as he always gave her conflicting stories when it came to this issue. At one point he told her that he had been left behind by their alien mothership forcing him to start life on earth alone with no single family-which was a lie and utterly funny. His death, however, brings a number of people claiming to be his family and after his estate. His mother, two brothers and a woman with a young boy-whom she claimed was Rick’s son show up claiming his estate.
Apart from her, all the rest want to have a share of what rick left behind. Her concentration, however, shifts to the accident that led to his death as there seems to be a lot going on in the dark and since she was already used to the secretive lives of the people around. Adding to the list is a man claiming to have made an agreement with Rick and which she was supposed to honor. The events seem too deep, and the people behind the happenings seem to have more than they want to get and are willing to get it even if it means killing again. The events throw her into confusion as she is unable, to tell the truth from that which is false.
This story is just fun especially with the instances of sarcasm; laugh out loud moments and the mysteries that are involved. The characters are awesomely shaped with interactive roles that keep you rocked to the final page.
