Sally Gardner
Author Sally Gardner grew up and lives in London, and is the daughter of two lawyers.
Since she is dyslexic, having been diagnosed at the age of twelve, she was unable to learn to write or read until she was fourteen years old and was thrown out of many schools, having been labeled unteachable. She also sent to a school for maladjusted kids.
However, she was able to receive a degree with highest honors at one leading London art college, which was followed by a scholarship to theater school. Then she went on to be a successful costume designer, working on some very notable productions.
After her twin daughters and son were born, she began illustrating and then writing picture and chapter books. Usually, these books had fairytale or otherwise magical subject matter. London’s Sunday Times called her an idiosyncratic genius.
In the year 2013, she won a Costa Book Award as well as the Carnegie Medal for “Maggot Moon”. “I, Coriander” won the Nestle Children’s Book Prize, ages 9-11.
She writes the “Mr. Tiger, Betsy” series, the “French Revolution” books, the “Fairy Detective Agency: Wings & Co.” series, and the “Magical Children” series, as well as some stand alone novels. Sally’s debut novel, called “The Little Nut Tree”, was released in the year 1994.
“Operation Bunny” is the first novel in the “Wings & Co.” series, and was released in the year 2012. Emily Vole inherits the abandoned shop, she finds a magical world that she never knew even existed. A fairy-hating witch, a train filled with brightly colored bunnies, and a rather mischievous set of golden keys are just some of the surprises that come with this new shop.
With the help of Fidget, a talking cat as well as Buster, a grumpy fairy detective, it is up to Emily in order to get to the bottom of Operation Bunny.
This book was entertaining and features a resilient heroine. Readers found this one to be rather funny throughout. The book is heartwarming, strange, with emotional moments in it, and strongly written.
“The Three Pickled Herrings” is the second novel in the “Wings & Co.” series, and was released in the year 2013. Emily Vole and her friends, at the Wings & Co. Fairy Detective Agency, are starting to worry. It has been five whole months since they officially opened and they have yet to have a single case. Sir Walter Cross, a local landowner, dies mysteriously all of a sudden. The detectives suspect there was fairy meddling.
When Mr. Rollo, the tailor, loses everything mysteriously and Pan Smith’s wedding plans get ruined the night before her big day, they are certain it has to be magic at work. Now they have not just one, but three pickled herrings they must deal with. Will they be able to solve the mystery of who it is stealing people’s luck before this fairy meddling goes much too far?
Readers found this one to be quite hilarious and Sally writes with magnificent language. By the end, things get wrapped up in a nice way. Each of the detectives are very endearing characters.
“The Vanishing of Billy Buckle” is the third novel in the “Wings & Co.” series, and was released in the year 2013. The Wings & Co detectives are currently in Puddliepool-on-Sea. The giant Billy Buckle has gone missing. Primrose, his daughter, is desperate to locate him, as are the detectives, because Primrose grows bigger each day and living with this giant is not nearly as much fun as it might sound.
There is also a murdered pianist and one vanished fortune-teller they have to deal with. It is up to Buster, Emily, and Fidget to get to the bottom of things.
Fans find these books just get better the more they read of them, as this one has more mysteries in it and some new characters. These characters, especially Emily, are fantastic people. The mystery too is a fun one and readers enjoyed helping the characters solve it.
“The Matchbox Mysteries” is the fourth novel in the “Wings & Co.” series, and was released in the year 2014. Podgy Bottom is in trouble at Halloween. All around town, cars are getting shrunk down to the size of a matchbox right in the blink of an eye. There is a giant purple bunny rabbit runs riot and there is an odd looking broomstick that causes calamity and chaos.
It sounds like a case for Wings & Co. Will Emily, Fidget, and Buster put an end to all of this magical mischief before it is too late?
“The Magic Carpet Thief” is the fifth novel in the “Wings & Co.” series, and was released in the year 2017. The fairy detectives from Wings & CO. are in a little bit of a bother at the moment. There is one lost leprechaun out on the loose and carpets are flying, as if by magic, all around Podgy Bottom.
Worst of all, Fidget has disappeared on some VERY URGENT business. It seems to be Buster and Emily’s trickiest case of all.
“Invisible in a Bright Light” is stand alone novel and was released in the year 2019. This story is about a crystal chandelier shaped like a galleon with the ability to splinter into a thousand pieces, a dangerous game known as the Reckoning, and a girl abandoned on the steps of an opera house as a baby.
The year is 1870. It is the Royal Opera House’s opening night in a frigid town by the sea, where a giant crystal chandelier in the shape of a galleon sparkles magically with the same amount of light as 750 candles. A theater rat, named Celeste, wakes up in a costume basket from what she hopes is just a horrible dream, and finds out that everybody at the theatre she works at believes she is somebody else.
The chandelier falls and she is haunted by a odd girl that claims to know about Celeste’s past and why she has to play this game called Reckoning in order to save the people she loves.
