Author Sally Thorne lives in Canberra, Australia, with her husband, a horse named Louie, and a pug called Delia. She spends days writing funding submissions and drafting up contracts. It is no surprise that she spends time climbing into the colorful fictional worlds of her own creation. Sally believes that Romance readers are always looking for intensity in their next favorite book, which is something that isn’t always easy to find.

As she was growing up, she would sneak Harlequin novels out of different relative’s bookcases, and was exposed to every trope in romance novels before she was thirteen. One of her favorite tropes is forced-proximity stories, or where the characters are snowed in. Another trope she likes and is a sucker for is the “brother’s best friend”.

Her dog Delia is always with her, especially when she is writing, and Sally finds pugs to be great writing companions. If she reads any piece of dialogue out loud, her dog will tilt her head with interest, blink at her like she is a genius.

While writing, there isn’t much that isn’t able to distract Sally. The biggest culprit is the Internet. She was once distracted by a butterfly passing by her window. Other things, such as: her dog coming into the room, piles of laundry, and her empty mug that needs to be refilled with tea.

Her favorite part of the writing process is that sometimes, when a blue moon is up high in the night sky, she enters a state of creative flow. Sally feels like she plugs her mind into her computer and downloads the story to it. She will stay up until after three in the morning until she is physically unable to do any more. She finds that when she reads what she wrote back the next day, it is like somebody else wrote it.

When dealing with her writer’s block, after getting upset about it, she will write the worst scene she can come up with. On purpose. She does her best to make it as terrible as she can. It is something that will cheer her up well, because she thinks by the time she is finished that she can definitely do something better.

Her debut novel, “The Hating Game” was released in the year 2016, and was sold in more than 25 countries. It was named in 2016 as a top twenty romance novel by the Washington Post, and was a top ten finalist in the Goodreads Choice Awards romance category. Some have cited the book that has rejuvenated the romantic comedy genre.

“The Hating Game” is the first stand alone novel, which was released in the year 2016. Joshua Templeman and Lucy Hutton hate each other. Not just begrudgingly tolerate or dislike. Full on hate. They have no issue displaying their feelings through a sequence of ritualistic and passive aggressive moves while they sit across from one another, executive assistants to co-CEOs of the publishing company they work for. Lucy is unable to understand Joshua’s uptight, meticulous, joyless approach he takes to his job. Joshua is obviously baffled by Lucy’s much too bright clothes, Pollyanna attitude, and quirkiness.

They are both up for the same promotion, with their battle of wits coming to a head. She refuses to back down as their latest game might just cost Lucy her dream job. The tension between the pair has reached a boiling point, and Lucy is starting to find that maybe she doesn’t actually hate Joshua. Maybe, he thinks, he doesn’t hate her either. Or this could just be yet another game.

The book is serious, sharp, and funny with an intense workplace rivalry and career drama mixed in with superb chemistry and some stellar banter. There are some tender and sweet moments. Some finished this book after having enjoyed and loved every single thing about it.

“99 Percent Mine” is the second stand alone novel, which was released in the year 2019. Darcy Barrett has taken on a world survey of men. She has traveled around the world, and can say for sure that there is no one that measures up to Tom Valeska. The guy has only one flaw, that Darcy’s twin brother Jamie first saw him and claimed him as his best friend forever. Despite her best efforts, Tom is off limits to her and loyal to Jamie, 99%. this is the problem with finding her dream guy when she is eight years old and peaking at her photography career at twenty. Ever since, she has had to learn how to always settle for just good enough.

Darcy and Jamie inherit a cottage that belonged to their grandmother, and are left with strict instructions to bring the place back to its former glory before selling it. Darcy plans on being in an aisle seat halfway across the sea the moment the renovations begin. Before she is able to go, she finds a familiar face on her porch. Tom, house-flipper extraordinaire, has shown up with power tools. He is also single for the first time in close to a decade.

All of a sudden, she is thinking about sticking around just to make sure her twin does not ruin the cottage’s inherent magic with his fondness for chrome and grey. She is surely not staying because her new business partner’s tight tees, or a perfect face that is inspiring her to pick her camera back up again. Quickly, sparks begin to fly, and it is not just the faulty wiring in the house. Turns out just one percent of Tom’s heart may not be enough for Darcy. She is switching things around. Darcy is going to make Tom 99 percent hers.

Darcy and Tom are two stellar characters, and they have some fantastic chemistry with one another. This is one wonderfully unique romance novel, and some readers couldn’t help but keep smiling. The story is passionate, sweet, and sexy, as well as hard to put down and entirely captivating. Sally Thorne is an excellent writer who has written a couple of excellent books so far.

I have LOVED reading The Hating Game & Second First Impressions. Sally, your writing style makes me feel like the female lead characters in these 2 books are sitting down talking to me, sharing these stories. I love the sense of humor you bring to these characters. They feel like real people to me, not just characters in a novel. I have read both books several times and I eagerly await your next novel.
    I’m a huge fan,

The Hulu movie of Hating Game is as close to Ephronesque as I’ve seen. Interesting her pug is named Delia. Would hope Lucy Hsle would turn more of these books into movies.
      More please. 🙏
