Sam Maggs
Sam Maggs was born in London, Ontario on November 10, 1988. She credits her parents with her love of geeky fandom, as they were both giant nerds that saw Star Wars more than 20 times in theaters and they would keep her home from school in order to marathon the “Indiana Jones” trilogy, so it’s really not her fault she turned out how she did.
She was named after Samantha Stevens, from Bewitched and collects original art of awesome fictional witches. Sam primarily loves K-skincare, Dungeons & Dragons, nineteenth century science texts, tarot, Ami Mizuno, Tamora Pierce books, Stargate, and the Josie and the Pussycats soundtrack.
Sam got her formative education at London Central Secondary School and the Lester B. Pearson School for the Arts. She got her BA in English language and literature and film studies from the University of Western Ontario in 2010, where she studied Victorian literature and sensation fiction.
Along with her BA, Sam holds an MA in literature of modernity from Ryerson University, which she completed in 2011.
As a Canadian that lives in Los Angeles, she misses bagged milk and Coffee Crisp.
Sam began her writing career as the weekend editor of the Abrams Media site Geekosystem, which eventually got consolidated into The Mary Sue, the feminist leaning geek culture commentary site. Following the merger, she took more of an associate editor role.
“Marvel Action: Captain Marvel” was nominated for a 2020 Joel Schuster Awards Dragon Award.
As an entertainment journalist, Sam has also contributed to Time Out London, National Post, Tor.com, io9, The Guardian, Marie Claire, BuzzFeed, PC Gamer, and Barnes & Noble.
Sam’s books have received praise from the OLA, Indie NextList, ALA, YALSA, GoodReads, and SLJ, and more.
Sam has moderated or appeared on panels taking place all over the world, at events like New York Comic Con, San Diego Comic Con, YALLWest, Emerald City Comicon, MCM London, Dutch Comic Con, Fan Expo Canada, speaking with the casts of shows such as Daredevil, Stranger Things, and Agent Carter.
“Con Quest!” is the first stand alone novel and was released in 2020. This is a comics convention adventure for younger readers about family, fandom, and finding your place in the world.
Alex and Cat are excited to be at the world’s popular comics convention, and they are even more excited to compete in the Quest, which is a huge scavenger hunt ran by their favorite nerdy celebrity. The big prize is a chance to meet him.
The twins ditch their elder sister Fi and head off to find the geeky clues, tackle some nerdy challenges, and cross as many items as they can off their Quest list, which includes volunteering at an Artist Alley booth, gathering cosplayers in enough colors to make a double rainbow, and actually finding something that’s healthy to eat in the convention center.
Can the twins work together even once they disagree on how to compete? Is Fi going to be able to find Alex and Cat before their parents realize they’ve gone missing? And most importantly, can these ultimate fans complete the ultimate Quest?
“Fangirl, Vol. 1” is the first graphic novel in the “Fangirl: The Manga” series and was released in 2020. The manga adaptation of the beloved novel by Rainbow Rowell.
Cath is a Simon Snow fan. Well, isn’t everybody a Simon Snow fan? But she’s made being a fan her entire life. Her sister has mostly grown away from fandom, however Cath just cannot let any of it go. Now that they are in college, Cath has to decide if she is really ready to begin living a life of her own. However does she even want to if this means she has to leave Simon Snow behind?
Cath does not need any friends in real life. She has got Wren, her twin sister, and she is a popular fanfic writer in the Simon Snow community with thousands of fans online. However now that she is in college, she’s totally out of her comfort zone. There are all these new people in her life all of a sudden. She has got a surly roommate with this charming boyfriend, a writing professor that believes fanfic is the end of the civilized world, a handsome new writing partner. And she has hardly heard from Wren the entire semester.
“The Unstoppable Wasp: Built on Hope” is the second stand alone novel and was released in 2020. Nadia Van Dyne is new to all this. New to being a real friend and stepdaughter (to a founding member of the Avengers no less), new to being her own person, new to running her own lab, far away from the clutches of the Red Room, that infamous brainwashing/assassin training facility. She is adjusting rather well to all this newness, channeling her energy into being a good scientist, a good friend, and a good Super Hero. It is all taking a toll on her, however, and Nadia’s finding that there aren’t quite enough hours in the day. So when she is gifted this virtual assistant that is powered by the most cutting edge AI tech that the world’s got to offer, she jumps at the chance to do less and experience more, like all the ads say.
The device really does work. She has a lot more time to pursue her passion projects and to focus on new discoveries. However it is never quite that simple, and nothing is like it appears to be. This thrilling adventure finds her facing up to her past while she attempts to shape her future, and discovering that sometimes the best way to effect some big change is to think small, possibly even super small, Unstoppable Wasp style. She will need the help from her Genius In action Research Labs (G.I.R.L.) squad and her found family in order to save herself and (not to get all dramatic about it) the whole world as we know it. Along the way, she learns that when she teams up with the people that loves her the most, they are totally and absolutely Unstoppable. Just another day in the life of your way, way above average teen Super Hero.
