The Sam Prichard series are a series of novels by David Archer, Amazon and USA Today’s bestselling author best known for writing a series of suspense thrillers. The first novel in the series was “Grave Man” published in 2015 that went on to achieve significant success, receiving praise both critics and fans of the mystery suspense genre. After “Grave Man” achieved much success, the author went ton to publish several more titles in the still ongoing series. The series of novels and its lead character Sam Prichard in particular have been called the next Jack Reacher, which is quite some achievement. Archer’s lead character is a man with a tendency to walk into situations in which there is no turning back, and making the best of them. Even as the entire premise of the series is nothing original Archer does a very good job of telling the story of Sam a retired cop that needs to get back into the world of investigative work to feel whole again. Even as the Sam Prichard series have been compared to the Jack Reacher series, the temperament of the lead characters is very different. As opposed to Reacher, Sam Prichard is one to settle into a family and get into relationships very quickly. Nonetheless, Archer follows many of the elemental aspects of detective suspense thrillers in by mentally filling in the blanks in creating Sam Prichard who relatable even as he is hard-hitting.

The chief protagonist in the Sam Prichard series is as unconventional as they come, being an ex-police officer that decides to try his hand at a career in private investigations. While some reviewers have called Prichard the next Jack Reacher, he is more of a combination of the classic James Bond and the enigmatic Reacher. However, unlike Bond or Reacher he does not rely on specialized training having only been an ordinary police officer. Nonetheless, once he stumbles into his new career he turns out to be quite good at it. While he lacks any specialized military or intelligence training, what he has going for him is a grit and determination to take difficult cases and persist until their resolution. He is not the typical hero with the answers or solutions to every problem under the sun but rather prefers to work with whatever his environment gives him in changing his world for the better. Still, it has to be said that his experience working as a police officer gives him incredible insights on the criminal mind. Moreover, being an ex-police officer is a boon for the private investigator as he can operate outside the more rigid regulations and rule books of the police force. He can follow his conscience to take actions such as involving hacker in his investigations, that in normal police circles would be deemed crossing the line, and perhaps result in him being ostracized or even punished by his superiors. As an independent contractor, Sam operates without the inherent baggage of public perception of the police as overly corrupt or authoritarian; as he lets his character and effectiveness of his work speak for itself.

The Sam Prichard series of novels are so intriguing for their thrills, suspense, and romantic story lines, elements that make for a good mystery. The Grave Man the first novel in the series introduces Sam Prichard as a retired police officer that gets into private investigations entirely by accident, only to find that he enjoys it. Archer writes fast-paced narratives that are full of multidimensional and realistic characters that mature over the course of the novels to become better persons. Providing interesting background stories to the lead character and his supporting cast, David Archer’s Sam Prichard series makes for personable and realistic stories that are very easy to connect to. Even as each of the novels introduces a new mystery and slew of different characters with disparate motivations, the lead character Sam together with a few of the major characters recurs in most of the novels. The cliffhangers, twists and turns of plot make for very entertaining reads as the narratives moves the reader towards an explosive finish that resolves the mystery. For anyone that loves Jack Reacher and James Bond, Prichard makes for a very likable and effective protagonist that will have you on the edge of your seat right from the first page.

“Grave Man”, the first novel in the series introduces Sam Prichard a police officer, who is forced into early retirement after taking a bullet to the hip that momentarily left him disabled. He has left the force behind and is now trying to live as a civilian, learning to walk again and ride a motor cycle, which he had never had the opportunity to do. Given his disability and distress at having to leave the job he has known all his life, life is barely bearable, until he finally gets some action when he is asked to help find a child that has gone missing. Freed of the rigid rules and regulations of regular police work, he teams up with Indiana Perkins a computer hacker to try to find the missing child. It is not long before he tracks down the child, only to find that he may have gotten himself involved in something even more dangerous. His investigations show a thread of conspiracy that could be either something akin to September 11 or a massive drug war. With no way out, he must strap in for the ride of his life. But things get even more complicated when Indie and her daughter suddenly find themselves in the firing line. Sam is ready to abandon all regulations and rules if doing so will enable him save the lives of the people he loves.

“Love and War” the third novel in the Sam Prichard series is an exhilarating novel with some of the most innovative premises. Sam Prichard finally gets married to computer hacker Indiana Perkins and the two lovebirds head off to Hawaii to enjoy their honeymoon. Just as they are leaving Denver airport, Sam notices something weird. It is not long before he learns that nuclear bombs have been planted in twelve US cities, including Honolulu where they are traveling for their honeymoon. Their honeymoon taking the back burner, Prichard puts his PI skills and Indiana’s hacking to use to locate the nuke and track and capture the terrorist responsible. But his work is not done as he gets a call from Harry Winslow his old friend that now works at Homeland Security. Harry needs him to investigate the magnitude of the terrorist threat and if possible track down the terrorist cell behind the attacks. The hope of a nation facing the specter of devastating destruction, Sam Prichard heads to Denver to find that he is at the right place at the wrong time. Will he manage to prevent the death of thousands of Americans by stopping the terrorists before they strike?
