Sara Levine is a published author known for works such as Treasure Island!!!, The Hitch, and Short Dark Oracles, her short story collection.

She attended Brown University, where she graduated with her PhD in English Language and Literature. There she was also awarded a Mellon Fellowship in the Humanities.

Sara loves to write and currently teaches it too. She is an instructor on creative writing at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Levine also teaches writing on Substack at ‘Delusions of Grammar’.

Sara has served as a co-editor of The Broadview Anthology of Short Fiction (3rd edition). She also wrote the Afterward for the Treasure Island paperback by Robert Louis Stevenson from Signet Classics.

A college graduate who has had a mixed bag of random jobs ends up reading the novel Treasure Island. She’s been a gift wrapper, an ice cream scooper, a part time clerk at a pet library, but reading this book has woken this main character up.

Reading the book makes her marvel at the design of her life. She has been so meek so far– when could she have ever come up with a scheme like this? When had she ever partook in a brash act? When had she been like Jim Hawkins and broken away from her friends going for the beach, killing a man, and doing anything to get herself a piece of gold?

This young girl starts to believe that the book was cosmically meant for her. So she decides that it’s time to make a bold move and to totally remake her life according to its Core Values. She is joined by her sister, mother, and an Amazon parrot that won’t go along with anything. Kirkus Reviews also thought highly of it, describing the novel as ‘A hoot’. The Hitch is a 2026 novel by Sara Levine. This was a book that the publications and critics could not get enough of. It was selected as a NPR Book of the Day, an Editors’ Pick from the New York Times Book Review– which called the novel ‘Winningly zany’, and was a Best Book of the Month as picked by People.

This is a funny comedy that follows along with a woman as she does her best to try and exorcise the spirit of a dead corgi out of her nephew and do her best to redefine the borders of a world that had been rational for so long before this.

Main character Rose Cutler is known for her tough standards. She is an anti-racist, an eco-warrior, a Jewish secular feminist, and is one of those people that believes that she knows the perfect way to do everything. This extends to parenting Nathan, her nephew of six years old.

Rose takes the chance to spend some more time with her nephew when his parents share plans to go to Mexico for a week. She offers to look after him and they agree, but only if she understands the rules for bedtime, routine, and homework, and doesn’t step over them.

Then Rose’s dog ends up attacking a corgi at the park and killing him. Nathan is apparently affected by the incident as shortly after he starts to bark and talk to himself. Rose thinks that he’s simply sad about the corgi dying, but Nathan says that he’s not sad. He also reveals some surprising news when he says that the dog is not in fact dead.

According to Nathan, the dog’s soul went into his body when it moved out of theirs and now the dog is living inside of him. Rose is now having to contend with doing her best to try and ban the corgi from out of her nephew before the end of the week and Nathan’s parents come back to get him.

Absurd and full of humor, this book focuses on themes such a bad boundaries, loneliness, and what happens when you take on the strategy of micro-managing everyone and everything around you.
