About Sarah A. Hoyt
The Portuguese author Sarah A. Hoyt is exceptionally well regarded for her unique brand of science-fiction and fantasy novel. Gifted with words, she has managed to turn the genre on its head, really making it her own in the process and creating something quite different. Pushing the boundaries of the format, she makes the tropes her own, taking them in new and interesting directions. This unique approach has proven to be successful, reaching readers from all over the world far and wide with her work.
Setting herself apart from other contemporary novelists working within her field, she provides countless surprises with all her twists and turns. Moving to America and living in Colorado with her husband, she publishes work that is appreciated both nationally and internationally. Writing under a series of different pen-names as well, she produces work for a variety of different audiences and readers. Proving to be hugely versatile in her style, she’s incredibly adept at adapting to different writing styles and genres.
Creating solid and lasting characters too, she introduces protagonists who really make a powerful impact upon the page. Set in far off worlds, her imagination shows no bounds, as she really makes the most of her compelling and expansive worlds. Grounding all of this with her characters, she manages to draw readers in, ensuring it’s easy to relate to the whole way. With lots more still on the horizon, there are plenty more books planned for the future, as she won’t be finishing up any time soon.
Early and Personal Life
Born Sarah D’Almeida Hoyt on the 18th of November in 1962, she was born in the village of Granja based in Águas Santas, in Portugal. She would then grow up in Porto in Portugal, learning in both Portugal and America, as she later attended the University of Porto. Gaining a Masters in Modern Languages and Literature, she would minor in German and major in English, while also speaking Swedish, French, and Italian.
Marrying Dan Hoyt, who was himself a science-fiction author as well as a mathematician, in 1985, she would go on to become an American citizen in 1988. Moving to Charlotte, North Carolina with him, she would find her voice as an author, drawing much of her inspiration from life around her. Currently living in Colorado, she continues to write to this very day, with a lot more novels set for release upon the horizon.
Writing Career
The first book Sarah A. Hoyt would write was titled ‘Ill Met by Moonlight,’ and it was first released in 2001. It would start the ‘Shakespearean Fantasies’ series of novels, with ‘All Night Awake’ following it in 2002, and ‘Any Man So Daring’ being published in 2003. Other series, such as ‘Shifters,’ ‘Magical British Empire,’ ‘Darkship,’ ‘Earth’s Revolution,’ and ‘Magical Empires’ to name a few, would also follow.
Publishing more than thirty novels and counting in a wide range of different genres, Hoyt has stated, ‘no genre is safe from me.’ Making each style her own, she’s always willing to adapt to new genres and formats, as well as writing alongside fellow authors, including ‘Sarah Marques.’ Contributing to the series of others and writing non-fiction, too, she’s also won awards, including the ‘Mythopoeic Fantasy Award’ and the ‘Prometheus Award’ on consecutive occasions.
Any Man So Daring
First coming out through the ‘Ace’ publishing label, this would initially arrive on the 26th of October back in 2004. The third part of the ‘Shakespearean Fantasies’ series of novels, it would bring the series to a close, tying up all the loose ends. This series would also be Hoyt’s first series overall, really setting the tone for much of what would come in the future.
Becoming a pre-eminent playwright in Elizabethan England, William Shakespeare is one of the most successful scribes of all time. This level of fame and success comes at a price, though, as his son Hamnet has completely vanished, lost to the realm of the Elven King. Now William must do whatever it takes to get him back, venturing into this strange and mystical land of fantasy, with the powers of darkness surrounding him. Will he manage to survive against all the odds, can he hope to find his son, and what will become of any man so daring?
Combining the historical figure of Shakespeare with the fantasy genre, this is definitely an imaginative novel. What it does do, it does well though, really making the most of its premise, delivering on every level. Concluding the three part fantasy series, it offers a satisfying conclusion, bringing the trilogy of novels to a close.
Heart and Soul
Set in a magical realm, this provides an alternative look at the Victorian British Empire, as it all takes place in a magical fantasy setting. The book itself would be the third part of the ‘Magical British Empire,’ and it’s best that they’re read in order so as to gain a proper sense of the world-building. Originally coming out on the 28th of October, it would first arrive in 2008 through the ‘Spectra Books’ publishing imprint.
All set to pilot a magic carpetship using the name of Enoch Jones, Nigel Oldhall believes this will be the perfect way to travel. Holding two of the most powerful jewels in the entire universe, the English nobleman hopes not to attract any attention while travelling. Planning to return them both to their shrine in the heart of deepest Africa, he wants to restore order to the world, and his own life. Can he escape the Chinese pirates in his path though, will he be able to complete the journey, and what will become of his heart and soul?
Finishing the series overall with a final adventure, there was a smaller novella set in the same world titled ‘A Touch of Night’ released in 2010. This book was the big finale to the original fantasy series though, it concludes everything in an epic and satisfying manner. Bringing it all to a close, the story really makes the most of the compelling premise, delivering with its well written characters and creativity.
