Sarah Andrews is a popular author and geologist from America, who has written 12 mystery novels based on science and a few short stories. A number of her novels feature the chief protagonist as Em Hansen, who has been described by Sarah as a straight talking and clear thinking forensic geologist. The books of Em Hansen are set in the regions of Rocky Mountains. Author Sarah has been lauded for combining detective work and science in her books. In 2005, she received the Writers and Artists grant from the NSF and was deployed through the McMurdo Station in Antartica to the distant field camps in order to carry out research for writing her 11th book that features the fictional geologist named Valena Walker. Author Sarah has won many other prizes in her career for her writing works, including the President’s Medal and the Journalism Award from the Petroleum Geologists Association of America. Author Sarah spent her initial years growing up on the American East Coast. Her father used to work as an art teacher and artist, while her mother was a teacher of comparative religions and English. Since Sarah was a child, she had developed a passion to explore things outdoors. She used to sail with her dad and wander alone in the fields and woods at the time of the family summer holidays in Maine. Author Sarah moved out of New England for attending the Colorado College. While attending a class of creative writing, she noticed that she had an interest in storytelling. Later, her aunt inspired her to take up geology course. This course proved to be very useful for her as she found herself in the company of the people who used to think like her.

Sarah also excelled in deducting graphical information by seeing patterns, making interpretations, and understanding the meanings. Sarah’s aptitude helped her to obtain her BA degree in the subject of geology. After graduating from college, Sarah stayed back in Colorado and started working as an apprentice. First, she joined a plumber at a construction site in Colorado Springs. Her coworker used to mock her saying that her fancy education has helped her in no way, landing her a small job. To this, Sarah used to happily teach them that the area had an ancient seaway once. Also, she used to share the fossils that she would find while digging. The next job that Sarah took was at the Geological Survey of US. With this job, she got the chance to work under the legendary geologist from Grand Canyon, Edwin McKee. Sarah’s work allowed her to study about sand dunes of modern times for understanding the rock formations from old sand dunes. Later, author Sarah went on to obtain an MS degree from the University of Colorado State in Earth Resources. Following this, she worked for the post of a petroleum geologist for ANGUS and Amoco Petroleum. And after the 1986 oil bust, Sarah shifted to California. There, she worked as a consultant for environmental solutions. Sarah also began giving lectures at the University of Sonoma State’s Geology Department. This job allowed her a lot of free time, which she started using for writing her mystery books. Author Sarah says that Agatha Christie, Dorothy Sanders, and Tony Hillerman are among her favorite authors of mystery books. As of now, author Sarah resides in northern California. She invests her spare time in sports activities like skiing, sailing, and flying, and in the pursuits of the community. Sarah is happily married and has a son.

The Em Hansen series written by Sarah Andrews is comprised of 11 books in total, which were released between the years 1994 and 2011. All the books of this series feature the lead character in the form of Em Hansen, who is shown as a forensic geologist living in Wyoming. An initial book published in the mystery series is entitled ‘Mother Nature’. It was released in 1997 by the St Martin Paperbacks. Author Sarah has depicted the primary characters in the novel as Em Hansen and Janet Pinchon. In the story, Em Hansen is shown digging deep into deception, greed, murder, and natural disasters. At the start of the story, Em Hansen is depicted as trying to get herself distracted from the pain of the loss of her father due to his death recently. She takes up an investigation case of a fellow geologist named Janet Pinchon. Hansen is asked by the father of Janet to help him in the investigation as she is the only one whom he can trust. Upon receiving the request from the powerful senator, Hansen takes a trip to Northern California and visits the place where the body of Janet was discovered. Em Hansen contacts the firm that had hired Janet Pinchon so as to find some answers about Janet’s personal life. However, the path seems to be very difficult as Hansen is haunted by her own dark past. Also, her job is made even more difficult because of the greedy developers, corrupt politicians, etc. The other thing that Hansen worries about the most is the endangered ecosystem. Now, in order to get to the bottom of the murder mystery, Hansen must fight the deepest fears as well as survive the assault from the Mother Nature’s vengeful act. There is also the fear of a brutal killer, who is keeping track of all the activities of Em Hansen.

Another mindblowing mystery book of the series is called ‘Only Flesh and Bones’. This book was also released by the St. Martin publication. The important characters depicted in this plot include Em Hansen, J.C. Menken, Miriam, and Cecelia. At the beginning of the book, Em Hansen is mentioned as trying to recuperate the sudden death of her dad and the alcohol addiction recovery of her mother. She does not have any work to do and so she visits her family ranch in Wyoming for spending some time there. Em Hansen’s former employer, millionaire JC Menken, asks her for help and also offers her a job is she agrees. Seeing that she has no other choice left, Hansen agrees. Menken informs her that his wife Miriam had died mysteriously, while his teenage daughter named Cecelia had witnessed the murder. But, because of the trauma Cecelia does not remember anything and so she cannot give out any information regarding the tragic incident. Also, she finds it very difficult to move on with her life. Menken asks Em Hansen provide help to his daughter so that she could get her life on track. While helping Cecelia, Hansen comes to know that shocking truth about Menken’s dead wife and reason behind her murder. But, she wonders whether Menken will be able to bear the burden of the truth?
