Heroine Complex

Heroine Complex is the first installment in the Heroine Complex book series. In Heroine Complex, the author Sarah Kuhn introduces the readers to Evie Tanaka, a personal assistant to Aveda Jupiter, a super heroine and protector of San Francisco. Aveda and Evie Taneka came into play more than eight years ago, when San Francisco suffered when a demon portal opened at the center of the city. The only upside that came with the demon portal was that some people including Aveda gained mild powers. Aveda Jupiter’s true skills are speed as well as martial arts, an ability that she hones through constant work and determination. Ever since she was young, renowned actor Michelle Yeoh has always inspired Aveda Jupiter. Aveda Jupiter became familiar with Michelle Yeoh after watching the movie The Heroic Trio, which was a film about three heroines in Hong Kong.

To survive and also to prove to the world that she is a superhero, Aveda Jupiter hides the fact that her demon power is useless. Aveda Jupiter is more than determined to protect San Francisco against the portals that still appear from time to time and spew demons. This, in turn, means that she constantly has to work on her social media, publicity, appearance and constant workouts, Evie on the other hand is the unnoticed and unthanked assistant whose primary task is to take care of Aveda’s unglamorous side as the superhero garners all the kudos and the demon fighting as well. Apart from Evie and Aveda, the author also introduces the readers to Lucy, who is Aveda’s martial arts instructor, Nate, Aveda’s physician and geek, who resides in the basement where he constantly works on his science experiments. Nate’s life revolves around the science experiment, something, which irritates Evie. Bea is another noticeable character in the Heroine Complex. Bea is Aveda Jupiter’s sixteen years old sister, whom Evie is raising with diminishing success. As each day goes by Bea continues to become rebellious.

Evie and Aveda have been friends ever since they were young. These two characters met while they were in elementary school. While in Elementary school, Evie was constantly bullied for bringing spam musubi to school. Annie on the other hand, loved spam musubi and ate them whenever she had the opportunity. When Aveda Jupiter decided to be a superheroine, Evie was by her side and gave her all the support that she needed. Because Evie was quite reserved, he opted for a behind the scenes role and became Aveda’s assistant. However, it does not take long before the tables get turned when Aveda injures her ankles. One day when demons attack Evie, who unlike Aveda does not know how to fight, ends up making use of powers that she has always repressed since the major incident that took place in San Francisco. Evie shoots powers out of her hands and in the process becomes the center of attention.

With that said, Heroine Complex is an imaginative, fast paced, wise-cracking and fun novel about zombie status, demon cupcake, Karaoke bars, other dimensional portals, martial art movies, female friendship, family, and romance.

One Con Glory

One on Glory is Julie’s story, an extremely shy blogger, who apart from changing her routines as a blogger by attending comic conventions, is also extremely shy when it comes to relationships. Julie has always been doing what she can to avoid relationships. He dream has always been to acquire, Glory Gilmore’s action figure, her comic book hero from the book, Periodic Seven. Glory can be compared to wonder woman, though she has much neater cloths. Nonetheless, it does not take long before one, Jack Camden, thwarts Julie’s dreams. Jack Camden is one of the main characters in a television series that has been loosely adapted from the Periodic Seven comic book. Julie believes that because Jack is good looking, and has no soul, he is miscast. When the two met at the convention, Jack informs Julie that his movie star façade conceals a true geek’s soul. As the story continues, Julie tries to establish whether Jack is as geeky as he claims to be and also is she going to be able to let her shield down for more than five minutes.

With that said, all the characters in One Con Glory have been well developed and are exceedingly realistic. The dialogue and the banter between the characters were not only witty but also realistic, while the setting was quite vivid. The reader is definitely going to fall in love with Julie’s alter egos, Drulie, the drunk one, Schumuzie, the one who can adapt easily to banter, and Schmthulu as well. The author, Sarah Kuhn has also done an excellent job of adding twists and smashed up stereotypes, throughout the novel.

Heroine Worship

Heroine Worship is an excellent addition to the Heroine Complex book series. Heroine Worship is not the only action packed but is also as humorous as the first installment. The friends and family dynamics, pop culture references, as well as witty remarks, were plentiful in this installment. As expected, the relationship between Evie and Annie was not only strong but also complicated in various ways. Heroine Worship delved into their friendship and also exposed the various holes in their friendship as well. With that said, Heroine Worship is an excellent book. Fans of the Heroine Complex book series are not going to be disappointed with this installment.
