Sarah Monette is the creator and the writer of the Doctrine of Labyrinths series of fictional novels. This series premiered in 2005 with the publication of Mélusine. This was followed by The Virtu, then The Mirador, and the fourth novel, Corambis. It is a fantasy series so check it out if you’ve been looking for something new.
Mélusine is the first novel to come out in the Doctrine of Labyrinths series. The novel is named after a city where so many motives exist. This is a place with just as many lies as truths, full of secrets, pain, pleasure, corruption, magic, and destinies that have been lost just as much as they have been found.
Meet main character Felix Harrowgate. He’s a wizard that is greatly respected and is handsome on top of it. However, that’s all in the present. His past contains more horrors and demons than he would care to admit. Like it or not, the trauma of living as a slave and being abused have come to the surface. Now they are risking destroying what and who he has worked so hard to become.
The people of the aristocracy have no idea that he has such a horror-ridden past. His master trained him well, amid the abuse, to be able to be mistaken for a nobleman. Mirador is the citadel in Mélusine that contains the forces of wizardry and are brimming with power. It was there that he thought that he could be safe, but he was sorely mistaken.
Then there is Mildmay the Fox. He’s a cat burglar, contrary to the name he holds, and he’s accustomed to having someone after him. He was brought up to be a thief and trained in the art of being an assassin. However, he was able to achieve independence living on his own as a burglar, shaking his Keeper years ago.
When he’s captured by a wizard using a calling charm, the mysterious and foreign man seems like a replacement for the Keeper he was able to lose. Only the wizard has caught the wrong person, since he was seeking to get Felix Harrowgate instead. Now they’ve been put together into a similar situation. Is Mildmay and Felix coming together fate?
The two might just find that they’re going to be allies as a secret waits that could link them forever and save them both or destroy them in the process. Follow them on their journey through magic lands and dealing with dark demons by picking up a copy of this first book in the series!
The Virtu is the second fictional novel to come out in the Doctrine of Labyrinths series by Sarah Monette. This sequel picks up with Felix Harrowgate and Mildmay the Fox once more.
Felix used to have power as a wizard. Then his old master took his magic, using it to break up the Virtu. The Virtu is an orb that serves as the wizards of the city’s keystone, protecting them and their magic.
Now Felix has done as much as he can to get back to being sane again. The only hope that he has to get back the life he had is to repair the Virtu. Mildmay was a burglar and assassin until his life shifted thanks to a curse. Now his leg is damaged and everything’s different. He knows that his fate’s tied to Felix by magic, and has no idea what waits for him in the city.
Together they will undertake a journey through a world of magic. Are they ready for what waits? Read this book to find out!
