It was titled ‘Dust Girl’ and featured the main character in the form of Callie LeRoux. The plot of the novel is set in Kansas City, United States, and revolves around the happenings in the life of the main protagonist Callie LeRoux. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, Callie is introduced as being choked by the dust. She and her mother operate a hotel in Kansas, through the cracks of which the dust seems to seep through. Slowly, her lung is getting filled with the dust. In order to protect her mother from getting ill by inhaling the dust, she suggests her to leave the town, just like their neighbors, who all have already moved to different towns. Her mother refuses to leave her and go alone. She hopes that the father of Callie, who has gone for a long time, will return to help them in their miserable condition. Soon, Callie LeRoux comes to know about a long kept secret hidden by her mother just as the Midwest seems to be swept by the biggest storm in the history. She discovers that she is not just a mixed race, but a half fairy also. It seems that the fairy kin of Callie have found her in her hiding place and are coming to take her away. The only person whom Callie LeRoux can trust is Jack, who is a former bootlegger and a charming person previously helped by her to get out of jail. The plot of the novel seems to be full of the hot jazz from the Kansas City, dance marathons, the despair of the Dust Bowl, dangerous beauties, and the train yards. With the help of these elements, author Sarah Zettel has been able to create a well rooted world in the history of America as well as in magic. Throughout the novel, two fairy clans fight in a war to take the possession of a fairy girl, marked by prophecy.

The second novel of The American Fairy series written by author Zettel was titled ‘Golden Girl’. It was published by the Random House Books publishing house in the year 2013 and continued to feature the main characters in the form of Callie LeRoux and Jack, along with Paul Robeson. The plot of the novel is once again set in Kansas City, United States and deals with the happenings in the lives of the primary characters. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, Callie LeRoux is shown as working at one of the major studios among the famous and stylish stars, from Kansas Dustbowl. Throughout the plot of this novel, she strives hard to search for her missing mother with the help of her friend Jack and singer named Paul Robeson, who is also the friend of Jack and Callie LeRoux. In the later parts of the novel, it is revealed that she is the daughter of the Seelie heir and the child of prophecy of the fairy kin. With her fairy powers, Callie tries to threaten the warring factions that are attached to all of the Hollywood power, knowing that she is always within the reach of them. In this novel, author Zettel has tried to shift the focus of the series from the poverty stricken Dust Bowl in the first novel to the glittering lights in Hollywood. Just like in the first novel of the series, the readers get to see the thrill of the predicament of Callie LeRoux as well as meet the historic personality of Paul Robeson, the opera singer. His character has been depicted with great dignity, strength, and grace. The readers found that author Zettel has tried to keep the stakes higher in this novel, as it can be seen in the novel that the menace and terror ratchet higher with the turning of each page of the book. This helped the novel to become extremely successful.
