The plot of this novel is set in The United States and revolves around the happenings in the lives of the main characters named Dew Phillips, Margaret Montoya, Perry Dawsey, etc. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, it is shown that the ordinary people across the whole of America are getting turned into paranoid and raving murderers because of a mysterious disease. Due to this, the infected people are committing brutal horrors on the strangers, their families, as well as on themselves. The members of this secret group include Dew Phillips and Margaret Montoya, who decide to use the infected former football player named Perry Dawsey for their research study, in order to find some possible solution against the deadly pathogen.
