The first novel of this series was published under the title ‘Infected’. It was released by the Crown publishing house in the year 2008. The plot of this novel is set in The United States and revolves around the happenings in the lives of the main characters named Dew Phillips, Margaret Montoya, Perry Dawsey, etc. In the opening sequence of the plot of the novel, it is shown that the ordinary people across the whole of America are getting turned into paranoid and raving murderers because of a mysterious disease. Due to this, the infected people are committing brutal horrors on the strangers, their families, as well as on themselves. In the meantime, Dew Phillips gets introduced as a CIA operative, working for the government secretly. He makes several attempts across the country for catching a live victim.

The only explanation to the problem seems that the deadly epidemic is governed by a form of malevolent intelligence. In order to fight against this threat, a small group is formed secretly. The members of this secret group include Dew Phillips and Margaret Montoya, who decide to use the infected former football player named Perry Dawsey for their research study, in order to find some possible solution against the deadly pathogen.

Perry seems to possess the ability to help locate the hosts of the disease. With his unpredictable and violent nature, he becomes both the best hope the country as well as its terrifying liability.
