The Screech Owls book series is a long-running series of juvenile fiction and young adult novels. It is written by a popular Canadian writer named Roy MacGregor. The series is comprised of a total of 27 novels and 1 novella released between 1995 and 2015. Each of the books is published under the banner of McClelland & Stewart publication. Roy MacGregor has set the series around a fictional team of hockey. The locations and events incorporated in the books are all real. Some of the hockey tournaments mentioned by Roy MacGregor in the books include the Winter Olympics of 1998, Winter Olympics of 2002, the Quebec Peewee Invitational, etc. However, the books do not depict the events in A specific timeline. Roy MacGregor keeps referring to the events occurred in the previous novels, but the continuous hockey seasons and the players’ static ages contradict the timelines.

Every book of this series is told from the viewpoint of the team captain and lead character named Travis Lindsay. They provide mystery and light action suitable for younger readers. The characters are shown having to deal with kidnappers, terrorists, ghosts, and murderers in between the tournaments and games of hockey. This series has won several prestigious awards and accolades over the years, including the Manitoba Younger Reader’s Choice Award and Our Choice Award. It has also been nominated for awards like the Arthur Ellis Award. A TV show titled Screech Owls was adapted from the book series. It was aired between 2000 and 2002 on YTV. The TV series has also won many accolades and honors during its successful run. Jonathan Malen, who had portrayed the role of one of the main characters, was also nominated in the category of the best young artist. The other artist that featured in the TV series includes William Greenblatt, Fraser McGregor, Neil Crone, Nicole Dicker, Nicole Hardy, Peter Oldring, etc. Some of the lead characters created by author Roy MacGregor for this series include Wayne Nishanian, Travis Lindsay, Sarah Cuthbertson, Simon Milliken, Mr. Dillinger, Muck Munro, Samantha McGuire, etc.

Wayne Nishanian is commonly referred to as Nish. He is the captain of the Screech Owls’ team. Wayne likes to make pranks on his friends and enjoys joking. The other thinks that he likes to include T-Shirts, alternative music, baseball, and preparing a collection of hockey cards. Travis Lindsay has excellent leadership skills and is filled with natural ability. He is a great stickhandler and skater. Hockey has a special place in his heart, but he is also passionate about other sports. Sarah Cuthbertson has good skating skills and is known to be a great point-scorer. She is seen as the best among the upcoming female hockey players.

Simon Milliken has a very short height, but is considered a fearsome player on the field. He works very hard as a player and likes to take up adventures with his teammates. The Screech Owls team trains under the guidance of head coach Muck Munro. Samantha McGuire joins the team in its second season. She is also considered a great player, but has to suffer a lot because of her family’s notorious crime record. After making close friendships with her Screech Owls teammates, Samantha refuses to abandon them and encourages her family members to change their style of living so that she does not have to keep changing cities. She wants to focus on her game by being in one fixed place.

The debut book of the Screech Owls series written by author Roy MacGregor is entitled ‘Screech Owls’. It was released in 1995 and features the primary characters in the roles of Travis Lindsay, Mr. Dillinger, Sarah, Nish, and several others. The book opens by mentioning that Travis Lindsay and Nish are best friends with each other. They head to New York with their team members to participate in the peewee tournament. As the team van approaches Lake Placid, excitement builds among the pals. The team’s trainer, Mr. Dillinger, entertains the team with his antics and tries to lighten their mood.

Travis and Nish are also excited with the prospect of participating in a large arena with the stands full of scouts. However, the excitement takes a sudden halt when things begin to go wrong just after there arrive. Their star player, Sarah, plays a bad game in their opening match due to her lack of sleep and Travis gets beaten by a group of boys on the street after their first match. Also, the team finds out that their equipment has been tampered by someone. They realize that an unknown enemy is trying to sabotage the team. As they enter the decisive match of the tournament, Travis and his team wonder how they are going to prevent the destruction of Screech Owls at the hands of someone they don’t know. They also don’t know the reason behind the attempted sabotage.

Another exciting volume of this series was released in 1996 under the title of ‘Adventure’. It consists of the central characters as Jesse Highboy, Jimmy, Nish, Rachel Highboy, Travis Lindsay, and others. Initially, it is mentioned that The Screech Owls take on another ride to participate in an important tournament up North. However, they are not aware of the deep trouble waiting for them. The team is told that the next stop for the team is Jame Bay and when the father of Jesse Highboy asks them how they feel about it, every team member exclaims with joy that it is a great idea. When Travis Lindsay’s pals learn that it is the first occasion that a non-native team has been invited in such a tournament, they feel the pressure of living up to their honor on away from home. Along with playing some good hockey, the team also looks forward to the chance of living with the local families, eating their traditional food, traveling by Ski-Doo, and experiencing the Northern lifestyle. Later, when things start turning bad in the freezing climate, they realize that they are up for a test not just in the game of hockey, but also in their fight for survival. This book provides the description of an exciting hockey game as well as a difficult situation from which the Screech Owls manage to come out with the help of their teamwork and dedication.
