Writing under the pseudonym Sofie Ryan, as well as Sofie Kelly, is the Canadian author Darlene Ryan, a writer who is well known for her unique take on the mystery genre novel, something which she has gone on to make her own throughout the course of her writing career, as she focuses certain genres on specific pen-names of hers, as this allows her to build a more concreted brand around her name as an author. This ensures that her audience keeps coming back for more, something which has been clearly proven by the success of the series over the years of its run, as it has come a long way in relatively short amount of time, with more expected to follow in the near future.

Starting in 2014 with the debut novel ‘The Whole Cat and Caboodle’, there has been over five books in total so far and counting, each one with a new mystery to solve. Set around the ‘Second Chance’ shop it develops this intricate little world in very fine detail, giving a clear sense of how it really is for the reader, bringing it to life as it jumps off of the page for them. Brought out in 2014 on the 1st of April, this was originally released through the NAL publishing label, setting up the overall ‘Second Chance Cat Mystery’ series in the process. Giving the readers a clear idea of what to expect it managed to create the overall ambiance of the world, along with establishing the premise as well. Introducing the characters too, it provides a self-contained mystery as well, giving her a full case to solve and something that will keep the readers constantly guessing throughout.

Moving into North Harbor in Maine, Sarah Grayson has a whole new life ahead of her as she undertakes the running of the ‘Second Chance’ refurbishing shop. Along with this she also starts to take care of a stray cat she decides to call ‘Elvis’, one of her biggest pet projects to date, as she seemingly has it all laid out ahead of her. That’s when her elderly friend Maddie is found with none other than the dead body of a man in her garden and everyone believes she’s guilty of murder, so it’s up to Sarah to prove her innocence. Will she kind the real killer? Are they going to strike again? Can she solve the whole cat and caboodle?

Released through the NAL publishing outlet once more, this is the second title in the ‘Second Chance Cat Mystery’ series. Carrying on from the last it continues with another case for Sarah Grayson to solve. It was brought out in 2015 on the 7th of April just one year after the first.

Sarah Grayson has happily been selling refurbished items in the ‘Second Chance’ shop with her cat Elvis for some time now. That’s when the waterfront is all set to be developed and everyone’s for it, all except one resident; Lily Carter. After Lily is murdered, though, it seems that at first glance someone wanted her out of the way. Is this really the case though? Will Sarah and Elvis be able to sniff out the clues? Can she solve it and buy a whisker?

The Second Chance Cat Mystery Series

A finely tuned series that is both fun and addictive as it is laid back, it’s easy to see why this has become so popular over the course of its run. Knowing and understanding the genre inside out, Ryan has fun with it in a relaxed a playful style, giving her characters clear motivations and driving forces. All this will ensure its place as a much loved series for many years to come, as it doesn’t look like it’s going anywhere soon, growing from strength-to-strength for many years to come.
