Shalini Boland
Author Shalini Boland was signed, before she had kids, to Universal Music Publishing as a singer/songwriter. Nowadays, she feels like that happened to a completely different person.

She enjoyed the singer/songwriter lifestyle during her twenties, but it isn’t a life she would ever want to return to. She loves family life much too much. Her life has become more about books and less about songs.

However, she now spends her days writing suspense thrillers (in between hanging never ending baskets of laundry and runs to school). Books and music are her passion and she has always been writing in some way.

When she began writing books, started out as just another creative outlet for her. It was not until many years later that she chose to try and publish.

She writes the types of books she loves reading, gripping adventures and suspenseful thrillers.

Writing is something suits her personality and she likes her own company. She can often be found sitting in her pajamas on the couch with her notebook or laptop, with a forgotten cup of tea somewhere close by, fencing questions from her two sons and paying no mind to the mess around her.

Shalini used to take an idea and fly by the seat of her pants with it, however, she wound up often writing herself into a corner and getting writer’s block. As a result, she plans out her stories, spending enough time spinning the plot out, and planning out each chapter. She makes separate documents for character personalities/traits and she also has a timeline she is able to refer to. This made writing a lot more of a pleasure for her.

Over time, she has also learned more about the actual craft of writing. Tension, pace, foreshadowing, all of those things that she once did instinctively, now she has more of a handle on them and build them into the plots on purpose. Shalini likes to think her ideas have always been strong, it’s just that now she has learned how to better execute each of these ideas.

Research is something that she dreads, since it takes so much away from her writing time. When she gets to the research part, she winds up enjoying the process and spending more time than is necessary reading about a particular subject. She is always paranoid about getting certain facts wrong, particularly since she began writing thriller novels. She knows it really can take a reader out of a story if there is some sort of glaring factual error. She knows two great police officers who are generous with their time and have no problems telling her if something is not working.

“The Best Friend” reached a high of number ten in Amazon’s UK Kindle charts, and hit number one in all of its categories. It was also a Kindle All Star title for many months in a row. “The Girl From the Sea” hit number one in the US Audible charts.

“Outside” is the first novel in the “Outside” series and was released in the year 2011. The future is divided by Perimeters: which are high-security gated communities where life goes on like normal. If you are inside them, you are lucky. For those that are outside, life expectancy takes a steep nose dive.

Riley is fortunate to have been born on the right side of the fence. However, her life of privilege comes crashing all the way down after somebody breaks through and kills her sister.

She gives up her own safety in order to find the killer. Luc decides to go with her otherwise she is going to be dead before she is even past the security gate. What awaits her on the outside is much more unbelievable than she ever thought.

Cut back to the present, where Eleanor’s world has been falling apart. This time next year, civilization will not be all that civilized.

“The Clearing” is the second novel in the “Outside” series and was released in the year 2013. In the ravaged future, kids are going missing.

Riley has been living safely behind her Perimeter Fence, however pretty soon she is going to have to confront the horrible truth of what is happening outside. There is an old foe approaching. Threatening to extinguish her own way of life.

In order to save herself, she is going to have to fight to save another. She has to put herself in the very last place that she ever wanted to be.

“The Perimeter” is the third novel in the “Outside” series and was released in the year 2013. In this broken world, a sinister force has been coming for Riley, and the only things keeping her safe are the people she loves and a perimeter. Once her life is threatened, she has to make impossible choices. Help comes from the most unlikely of places, and all that Riley needs to know is who she can really trust?

Meanwhile, there is a repentant murderer looking for salvation and peace, however he gets the opposite. Now he is going to need to make the toughest decision of his entire life.

“A Shirtful of Frogs” is the first stand alone novel and was released in the year 2012. The life of one WWII evacuee collides with the world of one boy from the present day, all in this timeslip adventure. While WWII starts, Jimmy Sweeney, age six, is being evacuated from London and into the country. He is now an outcast, getting bullied by all the local kids and is mistreated by the horrible Mrs. Cribbins.

One night some stranger shows up in his room. It is a clean boy that brings him some wonderful food as well as other amazing things. They become friends, and that’s good because before too long, Jimmy is going to need a friend. His life could depend on it.

Readers found this to be very enjoyable and beautifully written. Nathan’s story and Jimmy’s story and how they found one another and help each other out. These are amazingly vivid characters that you truly get to know and care about well over the course of the novel.
