Shana Abe is a NY Times bestselling and award-winning American writer, who is known for writing fantasy, young adult, paranormal, historical fiction, and romance novels. She is particularly popular for her two novel series, namely the Drakon series and The Sweetest Dark series. Her novels have helped her to win numerous Reviewer’s Choice Awards and one Career Achievement Award, both by the Romantic Times. In addition to the novel series, Shana has also written several mind-blowing standalone books in her career. Author Shana was born in Texas, United States. She spent most of her childhood in Colorado and lived in Mexico for a brief period when she visited the country as a foreign exchange student. At the age of 17, Shana visited Japan with the intention of becoming a model. Throughout her modeling days, she used to write silly romance stories during the breaks in between her modeling shoots.

Most of Shana’s initial writing stints had romance as the central theme. Shana’s interest developed in writing romances because she was particularly attracted to those kinds of books and enjoyed them reading the most. Following her stint in the modeling field, Shana attended college for higher studies in Los Angeles and graduated with a degree in the subject of drama. After obtaining her degree, Shana attempted to write her second contemporary romance novel. She entered a writing contest with that novel and secured the third place. This increased her confidence and motivated her to send the novel to several literary agents. But, none of them returned a positive reply. Shana felt that she was not able to fit her style of writing as per the rules governing contemporary romances. So, she decided to shift her focus to historical romance and concentrated to write her subsequent novels in that genre only.

By the time Shana started writing her first historical romance, she had gotten married to the love of her life. Her interesting love story motivated her to use it as the backdrop of her debut historical romance. Shana changed the time period of the story to make it look like a story of the medieval times and kept all the other elements exactly the same as her own romance story with her husband. This manuscript was bought by Bantam Books, which published it under the title of A Rose in Winter. After the successful first attempt, Shana set most of her subsequent books also in the medieval times. She has said that she chose this time period due to its great dichotomy sense. According to her, the medieval time inspires thoughts of courtly grace, chivalrous knights, and grandeur. The period also has a gritty & aspect that is hard to deny. Shana looks forward to writing many more stories of romance in the future and hopes to keep entertaining her dedicated fans through her stories for as long as she can.

The Sweetest Dark series written by author Shana Abe is comprised of a total of 3 books released between 2012 and 2017. This series is set in the post-Victorian England and consists of thrilling romances with adventure and riveting history. Some of the essential characters mentioned in this series include Lora Jones, Jesse, Armand, Eleanore Jones, etc. The debut book of this series is entitled ‘The Sweetest Dark’. It was released by Bantam publication in 2012. This book’s story is set in the year 1915 in England. Initially, Lora Jones is introduced as a 16-year-old girl. She appears to be a normal girl on the outside, but possesses some unique abilities. Lora keeps her special abilities hidden in order to avoid attention. She always seems to have known that she was not an ordinary girl. Lora doesn’t let anyone know that she is able to hear songs that others can’t hear and dreams about flight and smoke vividly.

There seems to be a mysterious voice living inside Lora that keeps reminding her that she is much more than what she thinks of herself. Lora Jones was brought up in an orphanage in one of London’s rough corners. No matter how hard she tries to keep herself away from attention, she keeps landing in situations that threaten her secret to be revealed. After some time, Lora learns that she has been selected as a charity student at an elite boarding school located on the southern coast of England, called Iverson. Her selection surprises Lora very much. The gothic castle of Iverson is something that Lora has never seen in her life. She meets two boys at the elite school, who help her get close to reality and change the course of her destiny forever. Jesse is introduced as the groundskeeper of the school. Just by taking one look at Lora’s face, he comes to know who she really is and what abilities she possesses.

Armand is featured as an arrogant and darkly handsome aristocrat, who keeps his own well-guarded secrets. Both Armand and Jesse seem to be holding the answers to Lora’s past. And one of them is holding the key to Lora’s future. Both Jesse and Armand try to win Lora’s heart. Later, a danger falls upon Iverson and threatens to destroy everything that Lora holds dear. The second installment of the series is known as ‘The Deepest Night’. It was also published by Bantam in 2013. Once again, the plot starts in 1915 and shows Lora Jones in the central role. She is about to finish her first year at the elite Iverson boarding school. Lora has come to terms with her reality of being a drakon because of which she possesses her magical abilities. On one hand, England’s shores get hit by war and on the other hand, Lora learns that she has to fulfill some dangerous responsibilities for possessing her astonishing powers. When Armand Louis requests her to spend the summer with him at his big estate, she agrees. In order to help his country in the ongoing and to keep Lora Jones closer to him, Armand turns his estate into a hospital for the wounded military personnel. Lora agrees to fulfill the duties of a nurse at the hospital. Armand seems to get attracted towards Lora and his attraction doesn’t appear to be under his control. While Lora tries to make Armand realize about her true feelings for him, she comes to know that there is one more drakon, who is held captive in a German prison. Lora knows that only she can help rescue the drakon and she puts her honed Gifts to the perfect use.
