Shaun Hutson is a well known British writer of horror, thriller, suspense, crime fiction, fantasy, and science fiction stories. He has written more than 30 novels under his original name and numerous pen names. Hutson is particularly famous for writing the Sean Doyle series, the Heathen series, and the Slugs series. The first book of the Slugs series has been adapted into a movie, however, he did not appreciate the movie more than his novel. Hutson has featured in a couple of horror films himself. Other than being a novelist, Hutson has also worked as a screenwriter and short story writer. Some of the pen names used by him for writing different genres of novels include Nick Blake, Tom Lambert, Daniel Graves, Robert Neville, Samuel P. Bishop, Spike T. Adams, Wolf Kruger, Frank Taylor, and Stefan Rostov.
Author Hutson was born in Letchworth Garden City, Hertfordshire, the United Kingdom in 1958. Currently, he resides in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire and spends most of his time writing novels. Hutson says that he does not feel any shame in admitting that he was expelled from his school and was fired from numerous odd jobs before he settled down to become a professional writer. In addition to having an interest in writing horror and suspense stories, he has a great liking for the sport of football. Hutson is an ardent Liverpool F.C supporter. The beginning of his career in the field of writing happened in the early 80s. His first book was the horror novel called The Skull. The publishing of this book was mainly limited to the UK. But, after Chas Balun profiled Hutson in the Fangoria magazine, he received exposure in the US as well. Author Hutson is credited to have written The Terminator’s UK film novelization. It was released in 1985.
After working on several original novels, Hutson shifted his focus to movie adaptations again in the 21st century. He wrote several novelizations of the Hammer Film Productions under the banner of Random House publication in the UK. Director Juan Piquer Simon used Hutson’s novel Slugs as the basis of his film with the same title. After the worldwide success of the film, Simon announced that he is going to make a sequel movie based on the sequel novel called Breeding, but the plan never materialized. As a screenwriter, Hutson has penned a screenplay for the October Eleven Pictures production company owned by The Figgis Brothers. The film, titled Box, was set to begin its shooting in Spring 2009, but the makers decided to drop the idea of producing the film.
Over 30 novels written by Hutson have become bestsellers. His writing commitments include working for television, magazine, and radio as well. At one point in his career, Hutson used to write under more than 6 pen names. He was indulged in everything from nonfiction to Western at that time. The other hobbies of author Hutson besides writing include rock music, binge-watching TV shows, and cinema. A psychiatrist has diagnosed Hutson as having less severe psychotic tendencies. He doesn’t like to socialize much and likes to spend most of his time in the comfort of his home. Hutson has given lectures to the Union of Oxford Students and has performed onstage thirteen times with the Iron Maiden heavy-metal rock band. Hutson’s work has a particular following in jail libraries. He has been warned of dire consequences on multiple occasions because of his work.
A popular series written by author Shaun Hutson is known as the Sean Doyle series. It is comprised of a total of 4 books released between 1991 and 2002. All the books of this series revolve around the life of the main character named Sean Doyle. He is depicted as a counter-terrorist agent. Several other essential characters mentioned by Hutson in the books of this series include David Callahan, Laura Callahan, Robert Neville, Christopher Ward, etc. Hutson has set the plots in different parts of the United Kingdom. The debut book of this series is entitled ‘Renegades’. It was released by the Time Warner publication in 1991. The book opens by depicting that Laura and David Callahan try their best to obtain immortality. Just like many others before them, they are adamant about doing everything in their quest to achieve it.
David Callahan is a multi-millionaire dealer of guns. He has never experienced peace in his life and is being constantly hunted by a couple of counter-terrorists from Britain. Neither David nor Laura has any idea about who hired the agents and for what reason. The race against the clock a trail of terror and violence leads from an ancient church based in France to London, and from there to the volatile grounds of Irelands, where ancient powers and modern terrorism battle against each other and lead to the revelation of a dangerous secret. This long-forgotten and a securely hidden secret threatens the lives of all the people involved. In the end, the story heads to the final confrontation, where the living and the dead start envying one another.
Another excellent installment of this series is known as ‘Knife Edge’. It was published by the Little, Brown publication in 1998. This book features Robert Neville and Sean Doyle in primary roles. Initially, it is shown that counter-terrorist agent Sean Doyle moves back to the United Kingdom after helping establish peace in the northern regions of Ireland. Sean Doyle’s return to the UK leaves several British soldiers frustrated and bored. Robert Neville is one of them. When Robert’s wife decides to move out of his life, he becomes mad and doesn’t have control over his actions. In his madness of getting his wife back, Robert Neville uses his military skills and plant bombs at different locations. He warns the authorities that if his demands are not met, he will detonate one bomb every hour and kills thousands of innocent people. Sean Doyle is asked to take charge of this case and help catch Robert Neville before he kills the innocent people of Britain. He starts by tracking down the devices planted by Robert and turning off each of them. Then, he moves ahead to nab Robert Neville before he hurts himself or his wife. This book is an excellent addition to the series. Various critics appreciated Hutson’s writing skills and character development in this novel. They praised him with kind words and helped the book become immensely successful and popular.

I’m fifty-two. I left school with no qualifications after a poor education.
I taught myself to read properly, purposely buying a book with several hundred pages (Dale Brown’s ‘Silver Tower’). Loved it.
I recall reading Renegades, amongst others by Shaun Hutson. Terrifically exciting reads, and I’m now going to buy them all again.
Thank you. Thank you very much.
I’ve read a lot of Shaun’s books over the years & never been disappointed with any of them.
He is up there with Stephen king & James Herbert, Dean Koontz. Currently reading Twisted souls
When I was a teen, many moons ago, I had a collection of shauns books. Maybe around 15 of them. He is one of my favourite writers. Unfortunately, I had to give all of them away due to unforeseen circumstances. I am now in a better place and I am slowly building up my collection again to sit pride of place on my bookshelf. It may take me a while, however, it will be worth it:)
Awesome – always love hearing those stories 🙂
