The Wicked Deep

First published through the ‘Simon Schuster Books for Young Readers’ publishing label, this would first come out back in 2018. Not a part of any series as such, it was initially released on the 6th of March to much acclaim, working entirely on its own. It’s a straightforward self-contained story with a somewhat moody atmosphere and elements of fantasy are featured throughout.

A few centuries ago the small-town seaside town of Sparrow oversaw the death of three sisters, as they were tried for being witches and drowned in the harbor. Now, all this time later, the town is cursed by their ghosts, as they return each summer to use the bodies of three teenage girls in order to lure boys into the harbor to their doom. Penny Talbot is seventeen now and Bo Carter has turned up at the town, with everyone unable to trust each other or themselves. What secrets are they all really hiding from one another, who will survive, and who will fall prey to the lure of the wicked deep?

This book really is dark and evocative on a number of different levels, making for a highly engaging and compelling read. The story itself is well told, really making for an immersive story and plot-line that fully draws the reader in and holds them there. With the world of Sparrow itself being extremely vivid, it feels as if the reader can fully explore it, making for a great story that’s accessible to all.

A History of Wild Places

Originally released through the ‘Atria Books’ publishing label, this would first be released on the 7th of December in 2021. It’s a straightforward and stand-alone atmospheric thriller title with a dark and moody atmosphere, creating a real sense of ambiance. There’s plenty of twists and turns too, with its self-contained mystery that makes it a perfect stand-alone title that’s easy to pick up, but difficult to to put down.

Needing only a single item to find a person who’s otherwise disappeared without a trace, Travis Wren is now on the case of the horror writer Maggie St. James. Finding a commune called ‘Pastoral’ which was founded during the 1970s, he stumbles across a community that shouldn’t exist any more, before going missing himself. Many years later Theo, a community member, discovers an abandoned truck, leading him on a path to discover what really happened to Travis. Will he be able to uncover the truth, what secrets are he and his wife hiding from each other and the community, and can they really learn a history of wild places?

Fans of both the mystery thriller genre and of the author really won’t be disappointed by this, as it’s rich in its sense of scope and scale. Knowing precisely when to draw the action in too, it’s intimate when it needs to be, allowing the audience to really get to know the characters. All this whilst not giving too much away, keeping them constantly guessing throughout, right until the very last page.
